Objective: This study was performed to identify dietary patterns in Korean men and to determine the associations among dietary patterns, nutrient intake, and health-risk factors.

Methods: Using baseline data from the Korean Health and Genome Study, dietary patterns were identified using factor analysis of data from a validated food-frequency questionnaire, and associations between these dietary patterns and health-risk factors were analyzed.

Results: Three dietary patterns were identified: 1) the "animal-food" pattern (greater intake of meats, fish, and dairy products), 2) the "rice-vegetable" pattern (greater intake of rice, tofu, kimchi, soybean paste, vegetables, and seaweed), and 3) the "noodle-bread" pattern (greater intake of instant noodles, Chinese noodles, and bread).

Using mouse peritoneal macrophages, we have examined the mechanism by which Leonurus sibiricus (LS) regulates nitric oxide (NO) production. When LS was used in combination with recombinant interferon-gamma (rIFN-gamma), there was a marked cooperative induction of NO production; however, LS by itself had no effect on NO production. The increased production of NO from rIFN-gamma plus LS-stimulated cells was almost completely inhibited by pretreatment with pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), an inhibitor of nuclear factor kappaB.

This study evaluated the differences between the spirometric values derived from Morris equation, traditionally used in South Korea, and the actual values, in the classification and detection of patients with respiratory diseases, and developed new predictive equations for the calculation of reference spirometric values for healthy Koreans.

We investigated Ca2+ clearance mechanisms (CCMs) at the axon terminals of mammalian central neurons: neurohypophysial (NHP) axon terminals and calyces of Held. Ca2+ transients were evoked by applying a short depolarization pulse via a patch pipette containing Ca2+ indicator dye. Quantitative analysis of the Ca2+ decay phases revealed that Na+/Ca2+ exchange (Na/CaX) is a major CCM at both axon terminals.

To determine the ionic selectivity of K+-sites in three members of Na+/Ca2++K+ exchanger (NCKX) family: NCKX2, NCKX3 and NCKX4, we compared the amplitudes of reverse mode NCKX current (I(NCKX)) activated by K+-substitutes (Rb+, NH4+, Cs+, or Li+) relative to that by K+ in an HEK293 cell overexpressing each of NCKX isoforms. In all three isoforms, monovalent cations activated I(NCKX) with similar order of potency: K+ > Rb+ > NH4+ > Cs+ >> Li+. However, the relative potency of Cs+ and NH4+ for activating NCKX2 was significantly higher than those for NCKX3 and NCKX4, indicating that the selectivity of NCKX2 for K+ is weaker than the other two isoforms.

Background: A thorough examination of the morbidity and comorbidity profiles among the elderly and an evaluation of the related factors are required to improve the delivery of health care to the elderly and to estimate the cost of that care. In South Korea where the aged population is rapidly increasing, however, to date only one study using a limited sample (84 subjects) has provided information on morbidity and related factors among the elderly. Using a large, stratified, random sample (2,767 subjects) from the population-based Ansan Geriatric study, the present study sought to assess the morbidity and comorbidity, and to determine the relationships of these variables with sociodemographic and health characteristics in elderly people in South Korea.

A film-handling machine (robot) has been built which can, in conjunction with a commercially available film densitometer, exchange and digitize over 300 electron micrographs per day. Implementation of robotic film handling effectively eliminates the delay and tedium associated with digitizing images when data are initially recorded on photographic film. The modulation transfer function (MTF) of the commercially available densitometer is significantly worse than that of a high-end, scientific microdensitometer.
