Dioxin compounds are persistent carcinogenic byproducts of anthropogenic activities such as waste combustion and other industrial activities. The ubiquitous distribution of dioxins is global concerns these days. Among of recent techniques, bioremediation, an eco-friendly and cost-effective technology, uses bacteria or fungi to detoxify in dioxins; however, not many bacteria can degrade the most toxic dioxin congener 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD).

A real-time PCR detection method has been developed for confirming the stability of F3B in plants and DGGE profiles were conducted for examining the diversity of endophytes during the remediation process. These results showed that the endophytic bacteria strain F3B could maintain a stable population in plant roots without largely interfering with the diversity of native endophytes.

Fish MT conferred better resistance than did mouse or human MT. When tilapia MT (tMT) was fused with an outer-membrane protein, outer membrane protein C (OmpC), the membrane-targeted fusion protein, OmpC-tMT, gave enhanced resistance compared with cytoplasmic tMT expressed in the same host cell.

To clarify the roles of MerR1 and MerR2 in the regulatory mechanism, both proteins were overexpressed and purified. MerR1 bound the regulatory regions O/P merB3 and O/P merR1, with a preference for O/P merB3 as measured on in vitro gel shift assays.

In this study, the Gram-positive MerP protein was expressed in transgenic Arabidopsis to create a model system for phytoremediation of heavy metals. Under control of an actin promoter, the transgenic Arabidpsis showed higher tolerance and accumulation capacity for mercury, cadium and lead when compared with the control plant.

Immunoblot analysis showed that MerP (BMerP) from Bacillus could be expressed on the membrane fraction of E.

DT, was transformed with the Bacillus megaterium strain MB1 merA gene, encoding mercuric reductase (MerA), which mediates the reduction of Hg2+ to volatile elemental Hg0. The transformed Chlorella cells were selected first by hygromycin B and then by HgCl2.
