Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) may lead to rejection and even graft loss of solid organ transplant recipients, making them not widely used in transplant patients. There is insufficient clinical experience in using ICIs as a bridging or downstaging therapy before transplantation. We performed a retrospective review of patients receiving programmed cell death 1 inhibitor (PD1) before liver transplantation for HCC in our center and analyzed the data of these patients with the purpose of investigating the safety and feasibility of preoperative PD1 inhibitor among liver transplant recipients and exploring the preoperative correlation ICIs and the postoperative risk of rejection and immune-related graft loss.

A graphene-based capacitive NO sensing device was developed by utilizing the quantum capacitance effect. We have used a graphene field-effect transistor (G-FET) device whose geometrical capacitance is enhanced by incorporating an aluminum back-gate electrode with a naturally oxidized aluminum surface as an insulating layer. When the graphene, the top-side of the device, is exposed to NO, the quantum capacitance of graphene and, thus, the measured capacitance of the device, changed in accordance with NO concentrations ranging from 1-100 parts per million (ppm).

Fibrinogen-like 2 (FGL2) was recently found to be associated with fibrosis in a mouse model of kidney damage and was proposed as a potential therapeutic target in chronic kidney disease (CKD). We assessed the association of renal FGL2 mRNA expression with the disease outcome in two independent CKD cohorts (NEPTUNE and Innsbruck CKD cohort) using Kaplan Meier survival analysis. The regulation of FGL2 in kidney biopsies of CKD patients as compared to healthy controls was further assessed in 13 human CKD transcriptomics datasets.

Background: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation involves irradiation preconditioning which causes bone marrow endothelial cell dysfunction. While much emphasis is on the reconstitution of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow microenvironment, endothelial cell preservation is indispensable to overcome the preconditioning damages. This study aims to ascertain the role of Roundabout 4 (Robo4) in regulating irradiation-induced damage to the endothelium.

The structure and electronic and spintronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) ternary compounds ABC (A = Sb, Bi; B = Se, Te; C = Br; I) monolayers are investigated using the first-principles method. The ABC monolayers possess typical Janus structures with a considerable potential gradient normal to the surface, inducing intrinsic Rashba spin splitting (RSS) at the conduction band minimum near the point. Among them, the splitting strength of the BiSeI monolayer is the largest and its Rashba coefficient can reach 1.

Preterm birth may have a pathological impact on intrauterine development of the fetal brain, resulting in developmental disabilities. In this study, we examine the expression of soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFLT-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF), which is one of the vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), as these play a key role in angiogenesis; in particular, we examine their effect on the sFLT-1/PlGF ratio in cases of preterm birth as compared to typical pregnancies. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed on samples of maternal-derived plasma and extracellular vesicles-exosomes (EVs-EXs) isolated at the third trimester, consisting of 17 samples from cases of preterm birth and 38 control cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the main treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF), but it's uncertain what the best approach is for patients who don't respond to initial treatments.
  • In a study of 276 patients undergoing repeat ablation, 22% were found to be non-responders, with 66% free from arrhythmias after an average follow-up of about 20 months.
  • Factors like non-paroxysmal AF and diabetes were linked to a higher chance of recurrence, while using empirical superior vena cava (SVC) isolation showed promise as a predictor for better outcomes in these repeat procedures.

Saliva is a noninvasive biofluid that contains the metabolic signature of severe periodontitis (SP, Stage IV and Grade C). Conductive polymer spray ionization mass spectrometry (CPSI-MS) was used to record a wide range of metabolites within a few seconds, making this technique a promising point-of-care method for the early detection of SP (Stage IV and Grade C). Saliva samples from 31 volunteers, consisting of 16 healthy controls (HC) and 15 patients with SP (Stage IV and Grade C), were collected to identify dysregulated metabolites.

Airborne optical images (AOI) are often with complex sunglint reflections, which brings a certain influence to watercolor retrieval. This includes the sunglint reflection with water surface statistical distribution characteristics caused by imaging viewing angles differences, with high spatial resolution surface discrete characteristics sharing similar viewing angles, and the surface Fresnel reflection sunglint differences caused by the skylight difference during the flight of unmanned aerial vehicles. Aiming at the multiscale optical characteristics of sunglint reflection in high spatial resolution AOI, based on multi-path optical radiation transmission, the sunglint reflection interference from three different imaging processes is clarified.

The diagnosis of nephrotic syndrome relies on clinical presentation and descriptive patterns of injury on kidney biopsies, but not specific to underlying pathobiology. Consequently, there are variable rates of progression and response to therapy within diagnoses. Here, an unbiased transcriptomic-driven approach was used to identify molecular pathways which are shared by subgroups of patients with either minimal change disease (MCD) or focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
