Current in vitro models for gastric cancer research, such as 2D cell cultures and organoid systems, often fail to replicate the complex extracellular matrix (ECM) found in vivo. For the first time, this study utilizes a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel, a biomimetic ECM-like material, in 3D bioprinting to construct a physiologically relevant gastric cancer model. GelMA's tunable mechanical properties allow for the precise manipulation of cellular behavior within physiological ranges.

Introduction: Human tissue samples are essential for translational cancer research. However, less than 20% of current biobank and genomic samples were obtained from minority patients, which may lead to biased understanding of cancer biology. The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with patient enrollment in our institution's gastric cancer biobank.

The cleavage and functionalization of carbon-carbon bonds are crucial for the reconstruction and upgrading of organic matrices, particularly in the valorization of biomass, plastics, and fossil resources. However, the inherent kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability of C-C σ bonds make this process challenging. Herein, we fabricated a glucose-derived defect-rich hierarchical porous carbon as a heterogeneous catalyst for the oxidative cleavage and esterification of C(CO)-C bonds.

Background: Previous studies have proven that 308-nm light-emitting diode(308-nm LED)and 308-nm excimer lamp(308-nm MEL) are effective in treating vitiligo, but there is a lack of comparison of their efficacy for facial lesions.

Objective: To evaluate and contrast the treatment success rates of 308-nm LED versus 308-nm excimer lamp in managing facial lesions among patients suffering from stable non-segmental vitiligo.

Methods: The enrolled 119 patients with 145 lesions were randomly assigned to receive 308-nm LED or 308-nm MEL for two months.

Inductively coupled plasma-reactive etching (ICP-RIE) of InGaZnO (IGZO) thin films was studied with variations in gas mixtures of hydrochloride (HCl) and argon (Ar). The dry etching characteristics of the IGZO films were investigated according to radiofrequency bias power, gas mixing ratio, and chamber pressure. The IGZO film showed an excellent etch rate of 83.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS)-mediated protein S-sulfhydration has been shown to play critical roles in several diseases. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are the predominant population of immune cells present within solid tumor tissues, and they function to restrict antitumor immunity. However, no previous study has investigated the role of protein S-sulfhydration in TAM reprogramming in breast cancer (BC).

CuO semiconductors are highly regarded in photocatalysis for their outstanding photogenerated carrier dynamics. However, the mechanisms underlying carrier separation and recombination in CuO remain elusive, largely due to the intricate interplay between defects and facet engineering. Herein, we elucidate the critical synergy between internal defects and facets in CuO for carrier dynamics.

The utilization of renewable lignocellulosic biomass resources is a promising solution to deal with the deficit of fossil resources and the associated environmental concerns. Among diverse biomass-derived products, lactic acid (LA) stands out as one of the most successful commodities and also a platform to connect raw biomass feedstocks with value-added chemicals and degradable polymers. Herein, we critically review the recent advances in the design and development of base, acid, and multifunctional catalytic systems for the conversion of different carbohydrates to LA and alkyl lactates via chemical routes.

Article Synopsis
  • RamA is a crucial regulator in bacteria, enhancing resistance to tetracycline-class antibiotics by activating the operon responsible for multidrug resistance.
  • The deletion of RamA leads to significantly reduced transcription levels of this operon, while restoring RamA reinstates normal function.
  • The study highlights RamA's role in bacterial membrane stability and suggests potential pathways for developing new antimicrobial treatments against resistant strains.

Background: Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) is a significant oncological challenge due to its aggressive nature and poor treatment outcomes. This study explores the comprehensive effects of radiotherapy (RT) in SKCM, focusing on cell signaling pathways, immune infiltration, immune gene correlations, immunotherapy response, and prognosis.

Methods: Using the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in SKCM patients undergoing RT were identified.

This study analyzes the role of the hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet score (HALP), a pre-catheterization blood parameter, in predicting the occurrence of thrombophlebitis. We recruited 268 in-hospital patients who visited the Department of Oncology of our hospital and underwent peripherally inserted central catheter between January 2021 and January 2024. The cutoff value of the HALP score was defined using receiver's operating characteristic curve, and the differences were analyzed with log-rank test.

Introduction: Sepsis and cancer are both leading causes of death worldwide, and they share several pathophysiological characteristics. Some studies have suggested a possible association between sepsis and cancer; however, few have investigated the core genes involved in both diseases.

Methods: Core genes common to both sepsis and cancer were identified using pediatric sepsis datasets (GEO: GSE26378, GSE4607, GSE8121 and GSE13904) and cancer databases (TCGA: BRCA, COADREAD, ESCA, KIRC, LIHC, LUAD, STAD).

  • Four years later, a CT scan showed a suspicious enlarged lymph node, leading to a diagnosis of recurrent cancer and subsequent laparoscopic surgery.
  • After surgery, the patient received adjuvant chemotherapy (CAPOX) and has remained cancer-free for over 2.5 years, highlighting the importance of close follow-up due to a 6.3% recurrence rate in similar cases.

  • Minimally invasive techniques for aortic valve replacement (AVR) aim to reduce surgical trauma and improve recovery times; this study compares outcomes of right anterior mini-thoracotomy (RAMT) and J-sternotomy (JS) methods.
  • The study included 832 patients, ultimately analyzing 315 with RAMT and 92 with JS; after matching for characteristics, both methods showed similar short-term mortality rates, but RAMT had better extubation rates, less need for blood transfusions, and shorter hospital stays.
  • Findings indicated that RAMT resulted in a higher 5-year survival rate (95.0% vs. 85.6%) compared to JS, suggesting that

Background: Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability globally. But little is known about the optimal level of physical activity for stroke survivors. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the dose-response relationship between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and all-cause mortality in stroke survivors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how different incubation temperatures affect ruminal fermentation and microorganisms in an in vitro setup, using rumen inoculum from Holstein heifers.
  • Results indicated that higher incubation temperatures increased NH-N concentrations and total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs), while decreasing liquid-associated bacterial amounts, with notable interactions between protein and energy levels.
  • The findings highlighted the complexities of ruminal metabolism under varying conditions, suggesting that while dietary adjustments can influence fermentation and microbial activity, in vitro experiments might not fully capture the physiological responses of the entire organism.

Two-dimensional lead halide perovskites (2D HPs) represent as an emerging class of materials given their tunable optoelectronic properties and long-term stability in perovskite solar cells. However, the ever-growing field of optoelectronic devices using 2D HPs requires fundamental understanding of the influence of the spacer on the physiochemical properties and stability of perovskites as well as establish which cation properties are closely related to suppress the halogen ion mobility. This study focuses on investigating the influence of organic spacers with intrinsic properties (e.
