Article Synopsis
  • * A novel method is introduced using dual defective alkylamine-modulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (DAZIF-8) with specific zinc ligands that enhance coordination and performance.
  • * The resulting polyimide/DAZIF-8 MMM shows a remarkable increase in ethylene permeability while maintaining selectivity, exceeding traditional limits for ethylene/ethane separation.

Metal-organic frameworks with high aspect ratios have the potential to yield high-performance gas separation membranes. We demonstrate the scalable synthesis of high–aspect ratio zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)–8 nanoplates via a direct template conversion method in which high aspect ratio–layered Zn hydroxide sheets [Zn(NO)(OH)] were used as the sacrificial precursor. Successful phase conversion occurs as a result of the collaboration of low template stability and delayed delivery of 2-methylimidazole in weakly interacting solvents, particularly using acetone.

A series of UV-curable hybrid composite blends containing a carboxylic acid functionalized polyimidewith varying amounts of high molecular weight (~1 K) PEG-grafted ladder-structured polysilsesquioxanes copolymerized with methacryl groups were fabricated and their structural, thermal, mechanical, and surface properties characterized. At a composite weight ratio of polyimide above 50 wt.%, a stark shift from amorphous to crystalline polyethylene glycol (PEG) phases were observed, accompanied by a drastic increase in both surface moduli and brittleness index.
