Ciguatera poisoning (CP) is caused by the consumption of marine products contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs) produced by dinoflagellates of the genus . Analytical methods for CTXs, involving the extraction/purification of trace quantities of CTXs from complex matrices, are numerous in the literature. However, little information on their effectiveness for nonpolar CTXs is available, yet these congeners, contributing to the risk of CP, are required for the establishment of effective food safety monitoring programs.

Gambierones are sulfated polyethers produced by benthic dinoflagellates in the genera Gambierdiscus, Coolia and Fukuyoa. While relative toxicity data for gambierones suggests they are low compared with ciguatoxin analogues, gambierones have been suggested for use as marker compounds for environmental monitoring programs for the presence of Gambierdiscus in marine waters. The published structure of gambierone and analogues of it, including 44-methylgambierone (44-MeGAM), have been reported to possess 1,2- and 4,5-cis diols, while only the 1,2- diol unit has been shown to undergo periodate oxidation.

Context: We demonstrate that the minimum of the reaction force curve of a diatomic or polyatomic molecule undergoing bond dissociation is significant in several respects. As has been pointed out in the past, it is the point at which the force opposing dissociation is strongest. We report the two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence rotational spectrum of the CO B 1Σ+ ← X 1Σ+ Hopfield-Birge system (v' = 0, v″ = 0) Q-branch in an ∼4850 K, atmospheric pressure plasma torch plume at thermal equilibrium in both the quenching-dominated (low laser intensity) and photoionization-dominated (high laser intensity) regimes. We provide a detailed analysis of the photophysics in these two regimes using a rate equation approach and propose modeling considerations for them as well. In the experimental spectra, distinct rotational transitions up to J″ = 83 are observed, allowing analysis over a very large range of rotational states.

In this paper we revisit earlier work relating to monoatomic atoms and ions published by pioneers in the area of electrostatic potentials. We include plots of the radial distributions of the electrostatic potentials for spherically symmetric atoms and cations, and for singly, doubly and triply negative anions. For atoms with anisotropy in their densities and electrostatic potentials, such as the halonium cations, it is shown how the molecular surface approach for plotting electrostatic potentials complements that achieved by directional radial distributions.

The first involves looking at the complex at equilibrium and finding the contour X of the electronic density which allows the iso-density envelopes of A and B to be nearly touching. For a series of diethyl disulfide conformations, the nearly touching contours of the electrostatic potential plotted on iso-density molecular surfaces allow the assessment of intramolecular repulsion. The electrostatic potential is plotted on varying iso-density envelopes to find the nearly touching contours for which (a) the surface electrostatic potential does not show overlap between atoms or functional groups and (b) the typical features are visible (σ-hole, lone pair, hydrogen ). When these nearly touching contours are closer to the nuclei, the more electron density is excluded from the iso-density envelopes and the smaller are the volumes corresponding to these envelopes.

Temperatures and temperature anomalies have been increasing in the sub-tropical regions of Aotearoa New Zealand and these changes may impact on harmful algal bloom (HAB) events. Benthic and epiphytic dinoflagellates, particularly the toxin producers, are the focus of this study as it is predicted that under future climate conditions they may produce more toxins or marine animals may become more susceptible to them. The results of past expeditions to Rangitāhua Kermadec Islands and sampling trips to Northland, Aotearoa New Zealand, are summarised and the results of the most recent trips to both regions are presented.

Background: National Health Service England issued a Patient Safety Alert in 2014 mandating all acute Trusts in England to implement Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) warning stage results and to do so using a standardised algorithm. In 2021, the Renal and Pathology Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) teams found significant variation in AKI reporting across the UK. Social-evaluative stressors-experiences in which people feel they could be judged negatively-pose a major threat to adolescent mental health and can cause young people to disengage from stressful pursuits, resulting in missed opportunities to acquire valuable skills. Here we show that replicable benefits for the stress responses of adolescents can be achieved with a short (around 30-min), scalable 'synergistic mindsets' intervention. This intervention, which is a self-administered online training module, synergistically targets both growth mindsets (the idea that intelligence can be developed) and stress-can-be-enhancing mindsets (the idea that one's physiological stress response can fuel optimal performance).
