False political information-misinformation or disinformation-is widely spread on social media. Individual social media users play a large part in this. However, only a minority actively share false material.

Moral leniency towards belief-consistent disinformation may help explain its spread on social media.

The spread of false and misleading information on social media is largely dependent on human action. Understanding the factors that lead social media users to amplify (or indeed intervene in) the spread of this content is an ongoing challenge. Prior research suggests that users are not only more likely to interact with misinformation that supports their ideology or their political beliefs, they may also feel it is more acceptable to spread.

Comparative Evaluation of 2 Work Experience Approaches for Predominantly Black Youth in a Rural Community: Implications for Public Health Workforce Development.

Context: In order to create a more diverse workforce, there is a need to involve historically excluded youth in public health-related work. Youth involvement in asset-based work experience approaches is especially relevant for rural areas with workforce shortages.

Objective: To explore the public health workforce development implications of community-based career exploration and asset mapping work experience from the perspective of Black youth.

Methods for Detecting Pediatric Adverse Drug Reactions From the Electronic Medical Record.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are common yet are often underreported, making them difficult to track and study. Prospective pharmacovigilance programs significantly increase detection and reporting of ADRs. The aim of this pilot study was to apply triggers used by a prospective pharmacovigilance program at a freestanding children's hospital to retrospectively detect ADRs at our institution, therefore determining if these methods could be replicated and provide the basis for implementation of a prospective pharmacovigilance program.

Seven Years of Parrot Conservation in La Moskitia, Honduras.

The population of the Central American scarlet macaw ( Ara macao cyanoptera) and other parrots have and continue to decline throughout the region largely from poaching to supply the illegal wildlife trade. Conservation efforts address this issue through protection efforts, including community patrols and government engagement, as well as nest monitoring, rescue and release operations, capacity building, and education and consciousness raising programs, all of which rely on long-lasting relationships and commitment. Using these principles, in 2010, a coalition of people came together, including the authors, to build a conservation program against overwhelming odds and with surprising success.

Intestinal cell kinase is a novel participant in intestinal cell signaling responses to protein malnutrition.

Nutritional deficiency and stress can severely impair intestinal architecture, integrity and host immune defense, leading to increased susceptibility to infection and cancer. Although the intestine has an inherent capability to adapt to environmental stress, the molecular mechanisms by which the intestine senses and responds to malnutrition are not completely understood. We hereby report that intestinal cell kinase (ICK), a highly conserved serine/threonine protein kinase, is a novel component of the adaptive cell signaling responses to protein malnutrition in murine small intestine.

Sex-specific Esr2 mRNA expression in the rat hypothalamus and amygdala is altered by neonatal bisphenol A exposure.

Perinatal life is a critical window for sexually dimorphic brain organization, and profoundly influenced by steroid hormones. Exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds may disrupt this process, resulting in compromised reproductive physiology and behavior. To test the hypothesis that neonatal bisphenol A (BPA) exposure can alter sex-specific postnatal Esr2 (Erβ) expression in brain regions fundamental to sociosexual behavior, we mapped Esr2 mRNA levels in the principal nucleus of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNSTp), paraventricular nucleus (PVN), anterior portion of the medial amygdaloid nucleus (MeA), super optic nucleus, suprachiasmatic nucleus, and lateral habenula across postnatal days (PNDs) 0-19.

Fundamental dimensions of subjective state in performance settings: task engagement, distress, and worry.

Subjective state constructs are defined within the traditional domains of affect, motivation, and cognition. Currently, there is no overarching state model that interrelates constructs within the different domains. This article reports 3 studies that provide converging evidence for 3 fundamental state dimensions labeled task engagement, distress, and worry that integrate constructs across the traditional domains.

Reliability and validity of the addiction severity index among homeless substance misusers.

Retrospective self-reports of behavior are widely used in alcohol and drug research. However, assessments of the reliability and validity of such data among certain populations are nonexistent. This study examines the ability of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), a widely used clinical and research instrument, to provide valid and reliable data within a homeless population of drug misusers.

Percutaneous computed tomography-guided fine needle brachytherapy of pulmonary malignancies.

Small caliber needle aspiration of lung lesions has been successfully and safely used for diagnostic purposes. We report our initial experience using computed tomography-guided fine needle percutaneous implantation for direct intralesional high-dose rate brachytherapy for malignant pulmonary lesions. Twenty patients with primary lung cancer or metastatic cancer which involved the lung or chest wall were treated with a high-dose rate remote afterloader.

Lack of clinical significance of "enzyme-only" red cell alloantibodies.

In a retrospective study on samples from 10,000 recently transfused patients, 35 samples were found to contain an antibody that reacted with ficin-treated red cells but was not demonstrable by low-ionic-strength saline solution and indirect antiglobulin test (LISS-IAT). In those 35 patients, the specificity of the antibody was such that each patient would have been transfused with antigen-negative blood had the antibody reacted in LISS-IAT. Tests on red cells from the units already transfused showed that 19 patients had among them received, by chance, 32 antigen-positive and 74 antigen-negative units.

Pleural peritoneal shunting for benign and malignant pleural effusions.

Pleural peritoneal shunting is a new technique that can be used for patients with symptomatic pleural effusion recalcitrant to the usual methods of treatment. Sclerotherapy with a thoracostomy tube is still the mainstay of treatment, but this new procedure has a place if other methods fail. Success can be anticipated in most of the patients with simple insertion under local anesthesia.

Demonstration of antibodies to Eimeria species in lambs by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Soluble extracts were prepared from sporulated oocysts, unsporulated oocysts and merozoites of Eimeria crandallis, E faurei and E ovinoidalis. They were assessed for antigenicity and specificity by ELISA using rabbit antisera to sporulated oocysts or merozoites. Antibody levels were examined in sera from colostrum-deprived coccidia-free lambs, conventionally reared lambs and lambs which had received experimental infections.

Ultrastructural studies of the effects of amprolium and dinitolmide on Eimeria acervulina macrogametes.

Medication of chicks with 125 ppm amprolium or dinitolmide adversely affected oocyst sporulation of Eimeria acervulina (Weybridge strain). Dinitolmide delayed oocyst production and no oocyst wall formation was seen up to 168 h post infection. Both drugs caused large numbers of abnormally small wall-forming bodies to be produced in the macrogametes.

Pleuroperitoneal shunting for recalcitrant pleural effusions.

From March 1, 1984, to Nov. 1, 1985, six patients underwent pleuroperitoneal shunting for either malignant (n = 5) or benign (n = 1) effusions intractable to the usual therapy. A modified double-valve Denver peritoneovenous shunt was inserted under local anesthesia in each case, and fluid from the right or left pleural space was shunted to the subhepatic space or pelvic area.

Avian coccidiosis: the administration of encapsulated oocysts.

Oocysts of fowl coccidia, suspended in a 12% aqueous solution of alginic acid, were dropped into 5% calcium chloride solution to form beads. Following ingestion by chicks, excystation of sporozoites was not affected. Oocyst viability was best when beads were air-dried to 33% of their original weight and stored in airtight containers at 4 degrees C.

Neodymium-YAG laser treatment of intrabronchial lesions. A new mapping technique via the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope.

We report the results of the treatment of 45 patients (38 with malignant and seven with benign disease) with intrabronchial lesions using the neodymium-YAG laser via the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope. Multiple treatment sessions were used with treatment intervals varying from four days to four weeks. Additional debridement procedures were also necessary in select cases.

Problems in the identification of species of Eimeria.

The paper is concerned with the principles upon which coccidia of the genus Eimeria may be characterized. Reference strains for comparative purposes usually are not available and the limitations of morphological data for speciation are discussed. The value of other parameters are considered such as host and site specificity, pathogenicity, immunological specificity, pre-patent period, sporulation time, enzyme variation, and DNA buoyant density.

Observations on the epidemiology of coccidial infections in sheep under varying conditions of intensive husbandry including chemoprophylaxis with monensin.

Coccidiosis occurs sporadically in lambs at about 6 weeks of age when oocyst output is very high in healthy as well as in diseased lambs. These experiments were designed to throw light on the source of infection and to correlate oocyst output in lambs and ewes with performance in lambs. In two experiments, one indoors on deep litter the other in outdoor paddocks, oocyst output (of different coccidial species), body weight and clinical state of lambs were recorded weekly.

Freedom of coccidial oocysts from Newcastle disease virus.

Oocysts were recovered from chickens experimentally infected with the Mukteswar strain of Newcastle disease virus and Eimeria acervulina or E tenella. Oocysts sterilised by sodium hypochlorite solution were washed, ruptured and inoculated into embryonating eggs which were examined after five days by the haemagglutination test for virus. All these tests were negative.
