Purpose: The urinary microbiota in women with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) can have bacterial uropathogens which are more virulent. The primary objective was to describe and compare the characteristics of the microbiota in voided urine of women with and without T2DM.

Methods: Two cohorts of women: those with T2DM (n = 87) and those without T2DM (n = 49) were studied.

The aim of this study was to explore the extent of disordered eating behaviors in a sample of patients with IBD and the association between demographic and disease-related variables and disordered eating. One hundred nine adults completed questionnaires during an outpatient visit to an academic IBD center.

Children's metabolic energy expenditure is central to evolutionary and epidemiological frameworks for understanding variation in human phenotype and health. Nonetheless, the impact of a physically active lifestyle and heavy burden of infectious disease on child metabolism remains unclear. Using energetic, activity, and biomarker measures, we show that Shuar forager-horticulturalist children of Amazonian Ecuador are ~25% more physically active and, in association with immune activity, have ~20% greater resting energy expenditure than children from industrial populations.

Vaccine exemption requirements and parental vaccine attitudes: an online experiment.

Increases in vaccine hesitancy and vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks have focused attention on state laws governing school-entry vaccine mandates and the allowable exemptions (medical and nonmedical) from those mandates. There is substantial variation in the type of exemptions available in each state, and states with more rigorous or burdensome exemption requirements generally have lower exemption rates. States have little evidence, however, about how vaccine-hesitant parents respond to different requirements.

Coprescription of Isotretinoin and Tetracyclines for Acne is Rare: An Analysis of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey.

Systemic therapy for acne can include tetracyclines or, for severe cases, isotretinoin. Concurrent use of tetracyclines and isotretinoin is known to increase the risk of development of pseudotumor cerebri (PTC). Given their association with PTC when used concomitantly, this study sought to quantify the estimated frequency of the coprescription of isotretinoin and tetracyclines and to assess for trends in the use of isotretinoin and tetracycline for acne as it relates to age, sex, race, insurance, and provider specialty.

On-chip recapitulation of clinical bone marrow toxicities and patient-specific pathophysiology.

The inaccessibility of living bone marrow (BM) hampers the study of its pathophysiology under myelotoxic stress induced by drugs, radiation or genetic mutations. Here, we show that a vascularized human BM-on-a-chip (BM chip) supports the differentiation and maturation of multiple blood cell lineages over 4 weeks while improving CD34 cell maintenance, and that it recapitulates aspects of BM injury, including myeloerythroid toxicity after clinically relevant exposures to chemotherapeutic drugs and ionizing radiation, as well as BM recovery after drug-induced myelosuppression. The chip comprises a fluidic channel filled with a fibrin gel in which CD34 cells and BM-derived stromal cells are co-cultured, a parallel channel lined by human vascular endothelium and perfused with culture medium, and a porous membrane separating the two channels.

Homeschooling parents in California: Attitudes, beliefs and behaviors associated with child's vaccination status.

Background: Senate Bill 277 (SB277) banned nonmedical exemptions from school-entry vaccination requirements for children attending classroom-based schools in California, but excluded homeschooled children from vaccination requirements. Thus, it was hypothesized that more parents would choose to homeschool to avoid vaccination requirements in response to SB277. There is limited literature on the vaccine attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors among the homeschooling population in the US, despite an overall increase in homeschooling nationwide and documented vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks within the homeschooled child population.

Comparisons of the antibody repertoires of a humanized rodent and humans by high throughput sequencing.

The humanization of animal model immune systems by genetic engineering has shown great promise for antibody discovery, tolerance studies and for the evaluation of vaccines. Assessment of the baseline antibody repertoires of unimmunized model animals will be useful as a benchmark for future immunization experiments. We characterized the heavy chain and kappa light chain antibody repertoires of a model animal, the OmniRat, by high throughput antibody sequencing and made use of two novel datasets for comparison to human repertoires.

Background: Lung cancer screening (LCS) requires complex processes to identify eligible patients, provide appropriate follow-up, and manage findings. It is unclear whether LCS in real-world clinical settings will realize the same benefits as the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST).

Objective: To evaluate the impact of process modifications on compliance with LCS guidelines during LCS program implementation, and to compare patient characteristics and outcomes with those in NLST.

Mediastinal metastatic melanoma: an unusual case presentation of recurrent melanoma.

Mediastinal malignant melanoma is rare as both primary and metastatic lesions. We present the case of a 50-year-old man with diagnosis of recurrent melanoma of the mediastinum. Our patient was previously treated for cutaneous melanoma in 2001 with surgical excision.

Levels of evidence (LOE) aid in the critical appraisal of evidence by ranking studies based on limitation of its design. Analyzing LOE provides insight into application of evidence-based medicine. The aim of this study is to determine if the quality of evidence in plastic surgery research has improved over the past 10 years.

AlpsNMR: an R package for signal processing of fully untargeted NMR-based metabolomics.

Summary: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics is widely used to obtain metabolic fingerprints of biological systems. While targeted workflows require previous knowledge of metabolites, prior to statistical analysis, untargeted approaches remain a challenge. Computational tools dealing with fully untargeted NMR-based metabolomics are still scarce or not user-friendly.

Impaired Exercise Tolerance Early After Heart Transplantation Is Associated With Development of Cardiac Allograft Vasculopathy.

Background: Exercise performance remains limited in some patients after heart transplantation (HTx). The goal of this study was to assess for association between cardiopulmonary exercise test performance at 1 year after HTx and future development of cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV).

Association of cognitive biases with human papillomavirus vaccine hesitancy: a cross-sectional study.

Given the link between vaccine hesitancy and vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks, it is critical to examine the cognitive processes that contribute to the development of vaccine hesitancy, especially among parents of adolescents. We conducted a secondary analysis of baseline data from a two-phase randomized trial on human papillomavirus to investigate how vaccine hesitancy and intent to vaccinate are associated with six decision-making factors: base rate neglect, conjunction fallacy, sunk cost bias, present bias, risk aversion, and information avoidance. We recruited 1,413 adults residing in the United States with at least one daughter aged 9-17 years old through an online survey on Amazon Mechanical Turk.
