Prolieve transurethral thermodilatation (TUTD) is the only third-generation transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) device that incorporates balloon dilation/compression of the prostatic urethra with cooled TUMT, at ≤50 W power. We evaluated its 5-year efficacy in the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in an open-label prospective multicenter trial. Eligible patients with American Urological Association symptom index score (AUASS) ≥9, peak urine flow rate (Qmax) <12 mL/s, and prostate size 20-80 g without obstructing median lobe were enrolled.

Patients with Kartagener's syndrome characteristically have immotile cilia and flagella. Ultrastructural analysis of the efferent ducts of the patient described in this report revealed that the cilia totally lacked dynein arms. Based on clinical findings his respiratory cilia also were not functional.

Reactive oxygen species are highly toxic agents that appear to have an important role in male infertility. In order to understand the potential for the testis to be protected from reactive oxygen, the mRNA levels of the natural reactive oxygen scavenger, copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD), were determined in testes and other organs in rats using northern analysis and in situ hybridization. Northern analysis of total RNA from organs of 60-day-old rats demonstrated an SOD mRNA with a transcript length of 0.

We prospectively studied 62 consecutive infertile men who underwent 100 intraoperative wet prep cytological examinations of testis biopsy material obtained simultaneously with permanently fixed specimens. Wet preps were performed by placing a small sample of fresh testicular tissue on a slide, adding a drop of Ringer's lactate, and compressing the specimen under a glass coverslip. Among these 100 wet preps, complete sperm with tails were identified in 62 specimens, of which 44 contained nonmotile sperm and 18 contained motile sperm.

We believe we report the first case of malignant juxtadrenal schwannoma. This rare tumor was discovered incidentally in a patient who presented with fever, mental confusion, weight loss, leukocytosis, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Preoperative radiographic and endocrine evaluations were suggestive of a nonfunctioning adrenal tumor.

We report a retrospective study on the clinicopathologic features and flow cytometric DNA analysis of ten renal oncocytomas compared with a control group of ten randomly selected renal cell carcinomas. Among the oncocytoma patients, no recurrences or metastases were noted over an average follow-up of 6.7 years (range = 6 months to 16 years).

Fine root extractions from soil cores of a south facing slope in the Southern Californian chaparral were used to study the dynamics of feeder root growth in a summer-dry area. The studies were concentrated on the root systems of Adenostoma fasciculatum, Arctostaphylos glauca, Ceanothus greggii, and Rhus ovata. The total fine root biomass of Adenostoma fasciculatum increased from 0.

Root systems of chaparral shrubs were excavated from a 70 m plot of a mixed chaparral stand located on a north-facing slope in San Diego County (32°54' N; 900 m above sea level). The main shrub species present were Adenostoma fasciculatum, Arctostaphylos pungens, Ceanothus greggii, Erigonum fasciculatum, and Haplopappus pinifolius. Shrubs were wired into their positions, and the soil was washed out beneath them down to a depth of approximately 60 cm, where impenetrable granite impeded further washing and root growth was severely restricted.
