Purpose: To investigate the long-term prognosis of appendiceal tumours incidentally detected at appendicectomy for suspicion of benign appendicitis.

Methods: A retrospective register-based single centre cohort study was carried out, using data from the local acute appendicectomy quality register of cases operated on at the Department of Surgery, South General Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. The local colorectal cancer register was also used to identify appendix tumours.

LiCu_{3}O_{3} is an antiferromagnetic mixed valence cuprate where trilayers of edge-sharing Cu(II)O (3d^{9}) are sandwiched in between planes of Cu(I) (3d^{10}) ions, with Li stochastically substituting Cu(II). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory reveal two insulating electronic subsystems that are segregated in spite of sharing common oxygen atoms: a Cu d_{z^{2}}/O p_{z} derived valence band (VB) dispersing on the Cu(I) plane, and a Cu 3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}/O 2p_{x,y} derived Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) band dispersing on the Cu(II)O planes. First-principle analysis shows the Li substitution to stabilize the insulating ground state, but only if antiferromagnetic correlations are present.

Atomic monolayers on semiconductor surfaces represent an emerging class of functional quantum materials in the two-dimensional limit - ranging from superconductors and Mott insulators to ferroelectrics and quantum spin Hall insulators. Indenene, a triangular monolayer of indium with a gap of ~ 120 meV is a quantum spin Hall insulator whose micron-scale epitaxial growth on SiC(0001) makes it technologically relevant. However, its suitability for room-temperature spintronics is challenged by the instability of its topological character in air.

Molybdenum carbides are promising low-cost electrocatalysts for electrolyzers, fuel cells, and batteries. However, synthesis of ultrafine, phase-pure carbide nanoparticles (diameter < 5 nm) with large surface areas remains challenging due to uncontrollable agglomeration that occurs during traditional high temperature syntheses. This work presents a scalable, physical approach to synthesize molybdenum carbide nanoparticles at room temperature by ion implantation.

Most studies on refugee populations are organized around trauma-related issues and focus on explaining pathological factors. Few studies are anchored in general developmental psychology with the aim of exploring normal age-specific developmental tasks and how the special circumstances associated with forced migration can influence how developmental tasks are negotiated. We herein report a simple two-step procedure for fabricating tetragonal CoMnO spinel nanocrystals on carbon fibers. The battery-type behavior of these composite fibers arises from the redox activity of CoMnO in an alkaline aqueous solution, which, in combination with the carbon fibers, endows good electrochemical performance and long-term stability. The C@CoMnO electrode exhibited high specific capacity, up to 62 mA h g at 1 A g with a capacity retention of around 90% after 4000 cycles.

Emergent order at mesoscopic length scales in condensed matter can provide fundamental insight into the underlying competing interactions and their relationship with the order parameter. Using spectromicroscopy, we show that mesoscopic stripe order near the metal-insulator transition (MIT) of strained VO_{2} represents periodic modulations in both crystal symmetry and V-V dimerization. Above the MIT, we unexpectedly find the long-range order of V-V dimer strength and crystal symmetry become dissociated beyond ≈200  nm, whereas the conductivity transition proceeds homogeneously in a narrow temperature range.

The unique electronic band structure of indium nitride InN, part of the industrially significant III-N class of semiconductors, offers charge transport properties with great application potential due to its robust n-type conductivity. Here, we explore the water sensing mechanism of InN thin films. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, core level spectroscopy, and theory, we derive the charge carrier density and electrical potential of a two-dimensional electron gas, 2DEG, at the InN surface and monitor its electronic properties upon in situ modulation of adsorbed water.

The mixed-phase nature of P25 TiO2 (85 % anatase/15 % rutile) plays a key role in the high H2 production rates shown by Au/P25 TiO2 photocatalysts in alcohol/water systems. Tuning the photonic band gap (PBG) to the electronic band gap (EBG) of Au/TiO2 catalysts resulted in considerable enhancement of the photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen under direct sunlight. Au/TiO2 (PBG-357 nm) photocatalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic performance under both UV and sunlight compared to the Au/TiO2 (PBG-585 nm) photocatalyst and both are higher than Au/TiO2 without the 3 dimensionally ordered macro-porous structure materials. The very high photocatalytic activity is attributed to suppression of a fraction of electron-hole recombination route due to the co-incidence of the PBG with the EBG of TiO2 These materials that maintain their activity with very small amount of sacrificial agents (down to 0.

We present a case of intraarticular nodular fasciitis of the hip joint in a 25-year-old woman, who presented with a 9-month-history of right groin pain and a decreased range of right hip motion. NK cells have become a subject of investigation not only in the field of tumor immunology and infectious diseases, but also within all aspects of immunology, such as transplantation, autoimmunity, and hypersensitivity. Our early studies aside from investigating NK cell activity in experimental animals and humans included studies of perforin expression and modulation in this lymphocyte subset. As NK cell activity is modified by their environment, we showed clinical stage-dependent impairment of their activity and in vitro effect of different sera, Th1 cytokines, and their combination in breast cancer, Hodgkin's disease, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients, especially with respect to metabolic and cell membrane changes of peripheral blood lymphocytes evaluated by spontaneous release of the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) that led to the correction of the LDH enzyme release assay for natural cytotoxicity.

In this study, we examined serum activity of proMMP-2 and proMMP-9 in relation to TNM stage, tumor size, lymph node involvement, grade of differentiation of tumors, as well as steroid and Her2/neu receptor status in breast cancer patients.
