Post-traumatic retinal siderosis, a case report.

A thirty-year-old patient attended a few hours after an ocular trauma while hammering, receiving trauma with a metal splinter at the left eye. Due to an unfavorable clinical picture, surgical management was decided, which was initially rejected by the patient. He returned six months later with a profound decrease in left eye visual acuity, reaching counting finger at one meter despite optical correction.

Electrostrictive and piezoelectrical properties of chitosan-poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) blend films.

Herein, we report the high apparent piezoelectric coefficient for chitosan-poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (CS-PHB) blend films. The structure of chitosan-poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (CS-PHB) blend films, exploiting characteristics such as dielectric, polarization, apparent piezoelectric properties, and their dependencies on the composition, were investigated. Based on the results of XRD, SEM, FTIR, PFM, and dielectric spectroscopy measurements, the structure of CS-PHB blend films has been proposed, which consists of spheric-like inclusion formed by precipitating isotactic-PHB interface layer, which consists of syndiotactic-PHB hydrogen bonding with CS, and CS matrix.

Emerging carbapenem-resistant Aeromonas spp. infections in Cali, Colombia.

Introduction: Aeromonas species are renowned enteric pathogens with virulence determinants linked to human diseases, such as gastroenteritis, skin, soft-tissue and muscle infections, and septicemia. A recent concern of resistance in this organism has emerged, especially the presence carbapenemases. Herein we describe a case series of emerging carbapenem-resistant Aeromonas species infection in our hospital in Cali, Colombia.

Context: Born-again stars offer us a unique possibility of studying the evolution of the circumstellar envelope of evolved stars in human timescales. To present, most of the observations of the circumstellar material in these stars have been limited to study the relatively hot gas and dust. In other evolved stars, the emission from rotational transitions of molecules, such as CO, is commonly used to study the cool component of their circumstellar envelopes.

Antibiotic therapy of hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia: an international perspective from the CAPO Cohort Study.

The American Thoracic Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America have developed evidence-based guidelines for the therapy of hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). In an attempt to evaluate if the care provided to hospitalized patients with CAP is in compliance with the care recommended by national guidelines, an international network of investigators has been collecting data from 40 hospitals in 13 countries. The care provided in the following areas of antibiotic therapy was analyzed: empiric antibiotic therapy, timing of initial antibiotic therapy, and switch from intravenous to oral antibiotic therapy.

[Antibiotypes of bacterial strains isolated from patients at the intensive care units].

The indiscriminate use of antibiotics in intensive care units has permitted the selection of multiple resistant bacterial strains in the hospital setting. Antibiograms present the sensitivity or resistance of these strains to drugs in current use. In this study, 100 bacterial strains were isolated from patients on medical and surgical ICU wards.

Effect of pH of medium and size of inoculum on activity of antibiotics against group D Streptococcus (Enterococcus).

Seventy-one clinical isolates of 5 species of group D Streptococcus (Enterococcus) were tested for susceptibility to 15 antibiotics at pH 5.0, 7.4, and 8.
