Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) are special devices which have a simple working and construction principle and outstanding actuation properties. The DEAs consist of a combination of different materials for the dielectric and electrode layers. The combination of these layers causes incompatibilities in their interconnections.

In this Article, we describe a carbon nanotube formation model in which sp2 carbon hemispheres form the embryonic caps from which a nanotube can grow. This requirement leads to a single wall carbon nanotube formation window concomitant with our systematic experimental findings, which show upper and lower diameter limits. Further, the successful formation of a nucleation cap (hemisphere) is governed by catalyst particle volume to surface area considerations.

In this letter, we show for the first time the use of metal oxides as catalysts in the synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using laser ablation. Further, SWCNTs have been synthesized at low temperature (down to room temperature), where their nucleation cannot be explained via fullerene nucleation. The data point to a nucleation mechanism previously not identified, that places a stable oxidized ring as the root cause for the growth of SWCNTs.

We present the improvement of carbon nanotube field effects transistors (CNTFETs) performances by chemical tuning of the nanotube/substrate and nanotube/electrode interfaces. Our work is based on a method of selective placement of individual single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by patterned aminosilane monolayer and its use for the fabrication of self-assembled nanotube transistors. This method brings a relevant solution to the problem of systematic connection of self-organized nanotubes.

Two different single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) growth modes (cap growth mode and circumference growth mode) are shown to exist. General SWNT diameter windows are derivable from catalyst particle size considerations. In addition, an almost complete picture of nanotube diameter dependencies for the cap growth mode is drawn from experiment.

Time-resolved carrier dynamics in single-wall carbon nanotubes is investigated by means of two-color pump-probe experiments. The recombination dynamics is monitored by probing the transient photobleaching observed on the interband transitions of the semiconducting tubes. This dynamics takes place on a 1 ps time scale which is 1 order of magnitude slower than in graphite.
