Methods: To assess the occupational exposure of the anaesthetist to anaesthetic gases, a total of 1 German and 25 Swiss hospitals were investigated. A Brüel & Kjaer Type 1302 multi-gas monitor was used to measure concentrations of nitrous oxide and halogenated anaesthetic agents in the anaesthetist's breathing zone. Measurements were performed during 114 general anaesthetic, 55 of which were in patients under 11 years of age.

Penetrance of melanoma was estimated by calculating the Kaplan-Meier function and fitting a log normal hazard function in 124 gene carriers in three 9p-linked kindreds. Using site-directed mutagenesis, we generated mutant proteins that show defects in the Ca(2+)-binding sites in a particular member of this family, the src tyrosine kinase substrate annexin II. SI, fasting plasma glucose and insulin, serum total triglycerides (Tg) and lipoprotein cholesterol (C) fractions, and ACE activity were assessed after subjects had taken placebo for 1 week and after 3 further weeks either on placebo (12 subjects) or fosinopril 20 mg daily (12 subjects), administered in a double-blind, randomized order. Measurements were made after 3 days on a standard diet (2500 kcal/d, 45% carbohydrates, 40% fat and 15% proteins) and after an overnight fast.

From 1980 to 1986 the Swiss National Accident Insurance Company (SUVA) recognized isocyanate-induced airway diseases as an occupational illness in 245 cases, which are presented retrospectively. Since isocyanates are widely used they are found at a large variety of workplaces. At present, isocyanates are the most frequent cause of occupational asthma in the Swiss industrial field.

Control of humidity may be necessary in various industrial processes. Contamination of humidifiers by algae and bacteria may lead in exposed workers to two distinct syndromes: extrinsic allergic alveolitis and humidifier fever. In Switzerland 18 cases of humidifier syndrome were accepted by SUVA as occupational disease.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe reported linkage between cutaneous melanoma and the dysplastic nevus syndrome (CM/DNS) to markers located on the distal portion of the short arm of chromosome 1 was examined in three Utah kindreds ascertained for multiple cases of melanoma. Family members in these kindreds were genotyped for the two markers reported to be most closely linked in the Bale study, PND and D1S47. Both melanoma alone and a combined melanoma/DNS phenotype were analyzed; no evidence for linkage was found.
