Introduction: Opioid administration has the benefit of providing perioperative analgesia but is also associated with adverse effects. Opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) may reduce postoperative opioid consumption and adverse effects after laparoscopic bariatric surgery. In this randomized controlled study, we hypothesized that an opioid-free anesthetic using lidocaine, ketamine, and dexmedetomidine would result in a clinically significant reduction in 24-hour postoperative opioid consumption when compared with an opioid-inclusive technique.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates optimal transfusion thresholds in complex spine surgery for adult spinal deformity patients and assesses the relationship between hemoglobin levels and postoperative outcomes.
  • - A retrospective review of 104 patients showed that those with lower hemoglobin levels (Hb nadir <9.0 g/dL) had more complications, including higher likelihood of receiving blood transfusions and longer hospital stays.
  • - The findings suggest that administering blood transfusions during surgery, as opposed to after, may improve patient recovery outcomes following this type of surgery.
