Objective: Tibial tubercle fractures are a unique class of pediatric orthopaedic injuries that frequently necessitate surgical treatment and strict monitoring due to the associated risk of acute compartment syndrome (ACS). However, current literature is conspicuously limited in its ability to estimate the risk of ACS after these fractures. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to utilize a nationwide database to estimate the prevalence of ACS after pediatric tibial tubercle fractures.

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) and those with avascular necosis (AVN) after treatment of developmental hip dysplasia (DDH) are at risk of developing coxa valga. Proximal femur guided growth is a minimally invasive option to correct this deformity. A systematic review of articles that described treatment of coxa valga with proximal femur guided growth (PFGG) and reporting on primary radiographic outcomes, demographic variables, surgical variables and complications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the long-term effects of Little League elbow (LLE) and Little League shoulder (LLS) on youth baseball and softball players, focusing on their recovery, competition return, and pain recurrence over five years post-treatment.
  • Out of 61 participants diagnosed between 2013 and 2017, a significant majority (over 80%) returned to competition, though nearly 40% had to change positions, and less than half were still actively playing five years later.
  • The recurrence rate of symptoms exceeded 20%, and those who experienced recurrence were less likely to continue playing and reported poorer outcomes, highlighting the challenges faced by young athletes after injuries like LLE and LLS.

Background: Patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip may require pelvic osteotomies to improve acetabular coverage. The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in acetabular version, tilt, and regional coverage angles following the San Diego acetabuloplasty (SDA), the modified San Diego acetabuloplasty (mSDA), and the Pemberton acetabuloplasty (PA).

Methods: Fourteen patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip and computed tomography (CT) imaging were identified.

Treatment of medial epicondyle fractures is controversial in pediatric orthopaedics with a recent trend towards operative fixation in overhead athletes. We performed a systematic review to compare outcomes in operative and non-operatively overhead athletes. A systematic review of the literature was performed.

Prostate adenocarcinoma metastasizes to bone and forms fragile blastic lesions, which can present as dense obstacles intraoperatively. There are limited reports on the challenges surgeons face when operating through these lesions. A 60-year-old male with a pathologic subtrochanteric femur fracture in the presence of blastic lesions was successfully treated with intramedullary (IM) fixation.

Elbow fractures comprise 15% of all fractures in children. Our study identifies risk factors and consumer products that contribute to pediatric elbow fractures. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was used to collect demographic and consumer product information between 2010 and 2019 for patients younger than 17 years who presented to the emergency department with elbow fractures.

Case: The Ganz periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is widely used to correct developmental hip dysplasia in the adolescent and young adult population. The aim of this case study was to examine the novel utility and safety of Stoppa approach for the Ganz PAO in a 15-year-old girl and 25-year-old man. The Stoppa approach is traditionally used for acetabular fractures, and its use for a Ganz PAO is relatively novel.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine how fellowship training influences the treatment of distal humerus fractures with either total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) or open reduction internal fixation (ORIF).

Methods: The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Part II Examination Database was queried for all orthopaedic surgeons who sat for the Part II examination between the years 2003-2019. Inclusion criteria were ORIF or TEA cases, selected by individual CPT codes for each procedure, and patients of at least age 65 years who sustained acute distal humerus fractures.

Background: Processed nerve allograft (PNA) is an alternative to autograft for the reconstruction of peripheral nerves. We hypothesize that peripheral nerve repair with PNA in a military population will have a low rate of meaningful recovery (M ≥ 3) because of the frequency of blasting mechanisms and large zones of injury.

Methods: A retrospective review of the military Registry of Avance Nerve Graft Evaluating Utilization and Outcomes for the Reconstruction of Peripheral Nerve Discontinuities database was conducted at the Walter Reed Peripheral Nerve Consortium.

We present the case of a 46-year-old male with atypically large left elbow pilomatrix carcinoma present for 10 years with emergent excision after developing life-threatening hemorrhage. Pilomatrix carcinoma is a dermal-based malignant tumor typically of the head and neck region. Histopathology shows islands of basaloid cells, shadow cells, and fibromyxoid fibroma.
