First-Trimester Vaginal Bleeding: Patient Expectations When Presenting to the Emergency Department.

Objective: First-trimester vaginal bleeding is a common presenting complaint to the emergency department (ED). Many studies have looked at risk factors, evaluation, and treatment, but none have looked at the motivating factors for seeking care. The objective was to identify the most commonly held concerns by women experiencing first-trimester vaginal bleeding.

2014 Fort Hood, Texas, mass casualty incident: reviews and perspectives.

On April 2, 2014, in Fort Hood, Texas, an active shooter incident occurred where four active duty soldiers were tragically killed. Active shooter incidents are becoming alarmingly more frequent over the last decade in the USA. The authors provide a detailed account of the events that occurred within the hospital and an evaluation of the triage decisions made on that day.

Methamphetamine Ingestion Misdiagnosed as Centruroides sculpturatus Envenomation.

The authors present a case report of a 17-month-old female child who ingested a large amount of methamphetamine that looked very similar clinically to a scorpion envenomation specific to the southwestern United States by the species Centruroides sculpturatus. The child was initially treated with 3 vials of antivenom specific for that scorpion species and showed a transient, though clinically relevant neurologic improvement. Her clinical course of sympathomimetic toxicity resumed and she was treated with intravenous fluids and benzodiazepines after blood analysis showed significant levels of d-methamphetamine.

Nutrition Mission.

The prevalence rate of childhood obesity in Houston exceeds the national figures. Nutrition Mission, a 14-week health promotion and education intervention, was conducted to determine its feasibility and whether it would increase the nutrition and exercise (NE) knowledge of students in an elementary school. This novel student-initiated program used 44 medical students as volunteer instructors in 3 fifth-grade classrooms in a Houston, Texas, elementary school, in which most of the 35 students were socioeconomically disadvantaged and members of ethnic minorities.
