Introduction: This study evaluated the status of stage 2 hypertension, abnormal ECG and their co-occurrence as possible risk factors of cardiovascular disease and their predictors in a Nigerian University population.
Methods: A total of 717 subjects participated in this study. Blood pressure (BP), resting electrocardiogram (ECG) and other clinical parameters were measured and categorised according to standard organisational guidelines.

Health of birds and heavy metal toxicity are growing concerns in Pakistan because of irresponsible industrial waste management and farming practices. Eight species of common wild birds were studied from three different study sites which varied in the type of environmental pollution (Kasur: industrial waste, Lahore city: traffic pollution and Shahdara: mixed pollution of traffic, sewerage, and industry which the Ravi River accumulates). Heavy metal analysis of six heavy metals in the various organs of birds showed that there was no evidence of organ preference for metal accumulation in birds.

Clinical evidence for the use of expandable interbody spacers in conjunction with MIS TLIF, however, is scarce. This study sought to examine the clinical and radiographic outcomes of patients undergoing MIS TLIF with an expandable spacer.

However, complications such as implant migration and/or subsidence may occur with a static implant. Expandable devices allow for expansion to optimize fit and mitigate iatrogenic endplate damage during trialing and impaction.

Dysfunction of the SIJ can produce pain in the lower back, buttocks, and extremities. Triangular titanium implants for minimally invasive surgical arthrodesis have been available for several years, with reputed high levels of success and patient satisfaction.

Methods: This multicenter, randomized, prospective study included 54 patients with degenerative disc disease requiring ACDF at a single level at C3-C7. Twenty-six patients underwent single-level ACDF with stand-alone spacers, and 28 with plate fixation and spacers.
The design and engineering of earth-abundant catalysts that are both cost-effective and highly active for water splitting are crucial challenges in a number of energy conversion and storage technologies. In this direction, herein we report the synthesis of FeO@NiFeO core-shell nanoheterostructures and the characterization of their electrocatalytic performance toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Such nanoparticles (NPs) were produced by a two-step synthesis procedure involving the colloidal synthesis of FeO nanocubes with a defective shell and the posterior diffusion of nickel cations within this defective shell.

Expandable cages when collapsed facilitate insertion; subsequent expansion in situ optimizes endplate contact. This report describes clinical and radiographic outcomes of MIS TLIF with an expandable cage.

To develop a standard assay for detecting Nab inhibition activity, we systematically studied current AAV Nab assays in vitro and in vivo. Several factors were found that influence the Nab titers based on the in vitro assay, including sera volume, AAV dose per cell, cell number and choice of transgenes.

Previously we established a role for quorum sensing (QS) and the master motility regulator, FlhDC, in biofilm formation by Y. pseudotuberculosis on C.

The magnesium ion transporter MgtB is part of the complex PhoPQ regulon, being upregulated in response to low Mg(2+). Despite the presence of other Mg(2+) transport systems in Yersinia, inactivation of mgtB had a significant effect on the ability of the bacteria to scavenge this crucial ion.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an acute, zoonotic viral disease caused by a Phlebovirus, which belongs to the Bunyaviridae family. Among livestock, outbreaks of the disease are economically devastating. They are often characterised by large, sweeping abortion storms and have significant mortality in adult livestock.

We explored reasons for LTFU during prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) from a client perspective in eastern Uganda, where antiretroviral therapy (ART) awareness is presumably high.
Methods: Seven key informant interviews and 20 in-depth interviews, including both clients who had been retained under PMTCT care and those LTFU during PMTCT were held.
Graves' disease results from thyroid-stimulating Abs (TSAbs) activating the thyrotropin receptor (TSHR). How TSAbs arise from early precursor B cells has not been established. Genetic and environmental factors may contribute to pathogenesis, including the bacterium Yersinia enterocolitica.

The disease was diagnosed by clinical, post mortem findings and the virus was identified using molecular characterization study. The history and clinical features included pyrexia, cornel opacity, nasal discharges, multifocal buccal ulceration of varying size and general unthrifty.

In the interest of generating new biomedical sensing techniques as well as improving those that currently exist, a great deal of attention has been given to upconverting lanthanide nanoparticles in recent years. In order to develop these nanoparticles for use in multiplexed and ratiometric sensing techniques, many recent studies have focused on experimental control of their emission wavelengths. Here we describe a new method for controlling the relative intensity of green and red emission bands in NaYF:Yb, Er nanoparticles via control of the excitation pulse repetition rate.

In this study, we investigated the seroprevalence, and risk factors, of Peste des petitis ruminants(PPR) in sheep and goat flocks from seven different geographical administration authorities (Ngorongoro, Monduli, Longido, Karatu, Mbulu, Siha and Simanjiro) located in Northern Tanzania. Serum samples from 657 and 892 sheep and goats, respectively, corresponding to 91 sheep/goat flocks and 43 villages were collected.

It attaches to a glass surface; forms an unattached aggregate (floc); and forms a pellicle at the liquid-gas interface. The three forms of biofilm resemble each other when examined by scanning electron microscopy.

The genes encode FAD-, NADP- and O(2)-dependent enzymes that catalyse oxygenation of soft-nucleophilic heteroatom centres in a range of substrates. Although usually classified as xenobiotic-metabolising enzymes, examples of FMOs exist that have evolved to metabolise specific endogenous substrates as part of a discrete physiological process.

To investigate Yersinia pathogenicity and the evolutionary divergence of the genus, the effect of pathogenic yersiniae on the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans was studied. Three strains of Yersinia pestis, including a strain lacking pMT1, caused blockage and death of C. elegans; one strain, lacking the haemin storage (hms) locus, caused no effect.

To investigate the function of the enzyme leucine aminopeptidase in nematodes, a Caenorhabditis elegans leucine aminopeptidase gene identified in the genome sequence was functionally analysed by transfection of a leucine aminopeptidase beta-galactosidase reporter construct and characterisation of a null mutant. The leucine aminopeptidase transgene is expressed along the length of the gut, and immunolocalisation shows the enzyme in the buccal cavity, pharynx, anterior gut and rectum. It is constitutively expressed as seen by analysis of cDNAs constructed from mRNAs of nematodes taken at 2 h intervals through the life-cycle; and by western blot analysis of protein from the same set of nematodes.
