The incidence of congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle and review of the literature.

The aim of this study was to identify the hitherto unknown incidence of congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle (CPC), based on a cohort of continuous livebirths born in our hospital, to review the literature and investigate if there is evidence supporting the published association between left-sided CPC and dextrocardia. From our electronic medical record and radiology databases, we identified all live births and patients with the diagnosis of CPC born from 2000 to 2016. We reviewed the imaging which included one or both clavicles to search for unrecorded CPC cases and reviewed all retrievable CPC publications listed in PubMed and publications quoted within these publications going back to 1910.

Mobility after intertrochanteric hip fracture fixation with either a sliding hip screw or a cephalomedullary nail: Sub group analysis of a randomised trial of 1000 patients.

Aims: The aim of this study was to determine if different patient groups have superior mobility regain following intertrochanteric hip fracture fixation with a cephomedullary nail compared to a sliding hip screw (SHS).

Patients And Methods: The present study is a subgroup analysis of patients which were enrolled into a randomized controlled trial which randomized 1000 patients with an intertrochanteric hip fracture to fixation with either a short cephomedullary nail (Targon® PF or PFT) or a SHS. In the present study the two treatment groups were dicotomised on the basis of six variables determined at the time of admission; age (<80; ≥80 years), sex, residence (admitted from own home; institutional care), mobility (mobility score ≥7 [good]; <7 [poor]), mental status (AMTS < 7 [cognitively impaired]; ≥7) and health status (ASA < 3; ≥3).

Impaction-fracture of the capitate and lunate: a case report.

We report a 15-year-old girl who underwent a mid-carpal fusion for undiagnosed impaction-fractures of the capitate, lunate, and triquetrum after a fall on her outstretched left hand in a dorsiflexed and radially deviated position. The joint was dis-impacted, and the height of the lunate was restored using a cortical bone graft. The damaged proximal capitate articular surface was decorticated to facilitate fusion, as was the lunotriquetral articulation.

The use of weekly departmental review of all orthopaedic intra-operative radiographs in order to improve quality, due to standardized peer expectations and the "Hawthorne effect".

Introduction: Clinical governance highlights risk management, clinical effectiveness and use of evidence based practice as key elements in the provision of a quality service. A change in the method of quality control in our orthopaedic trauma unit allowed us the opportunity to study if the quality of operative outcomes had changed as a result. The Hawthorne effect refers to phenomenon whereby employees work quality improves by virtue of their awareness that their labour is being assessed.

Illness representations in patients with hand injury.

Purpose: Differences in illness perception about hand injury may partly explain the variation in health behaviours such as adherence to post-operative therapy, coping strategy, emotional response and eventual clinical outcome. This study examined the illness perception of patients with hand injuries in the acute trauma setting.

Methods: The disability and severity of injury were assessed using the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire and the Hand Injury Severity Score (HISS).
