Cataracts are a common consequence of aging; however, pathogenesis remains poorly understood. Here, we observed that after 3 months of age mice lacking the G protein-coupled leukocyte chemotactic receptor Fpr1 (N-formyl peptide receptor 1) began to develop bilateral posterior subcapsular cataracts that progressed to lens rupture and severe degeneration, without evidence of either systemic or local ocular infection or inflammation. Consistent with this, Fpr1 was detected in both mouse and human lens in primary lens epithelial cells (LECs), the only cell type present in the lens; however, expression was confined to subcapsular LECs located along the anterior hemispheric surface.

In chronic infection, the cause of Chagas disease, life-threatening inflammatory diseases develop over time in the heart, esophagus, and colon of some patients. C57BL/6 mice infected with the myotropic Colombiana strain of model many of the immunological and parasitological features of human infection but succumb to chronic paralyzing myositis and skeletal muscle vasculitis, not cardiomyopathy or gastrointestinal disease. Here we show that T cell depletion in the chronic phase of this model increased tissue parasitism to acute-phase levels and induced neutrophilic skeletal muscle inflammation.

Previous research indicates that when people participate in multi-trial games of chance, the results of previous trials impact subsequent wager size. For example, the "house money" and "break even" effects suggest that an individual's risk-taking propensity increases when financially winning losing during a gambling session. Additionally, the "mood maintenance hypothesis" and affect regulation hypothesis suggest that people in positive and negative affective states are less and more likely to gamble than when in neutral affective states, respectively.

Infectious agents are often considered potential triggers of chronic inflammatory disease, including autoimmunity; however, direct evidence is usually lacking. Here we show that following control of acute infection of mice with the myotropic Colombiana strain of Trypanosoma cruzi, parasites persisted in tissue at low levels associated with development of systemic necrotizing vasculitis. Lesions occurred in many but not all organs and tissues, with skeletal muscle arteries being the most severely affected, and were associated with myositis, atrophy, paresis/paralysis, and death.

In their recent article in Cognition, Xu and Harvey (2014) suggested that people who placed wagers on an online gambling site demonstrated very different wagering preferences depending on whether they were on winning or losing streaks. Specifically, they reported that people on winning streaks were more likely to win their subsequent wagers because they chose increasingly "safer," higher-probability bets as the win streak continued. People on losing streaks were more likely to lose their subsequent wagers because they chose "riskier," lower-probability wagers as the losing streak progressed.

Results: FPR1 is functionally expressed on human lens epithelial cells but has atypical properties compared with hematopoietic cell FPR1.

In this study, we investigate photophysical and photoinduced current responses of a nanocomposite which consists of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), thiol derivative perylene compound (ETPTCDI), and cadmium selenide quantum dots (QDs). These QDs as well as the ETPTCDI harvest photons and transfer their excited electrons or holes to CNTs to complete the circuit. Both QDs and ETPTCDI contribute charges to the carbon nanotubes, which increased the overall photon harvest efficiency of the nanocomposite.

Classically, activated transcription by nuclear receptors (NRs) is due to a ligand-induced switch from corepressor- to coactivator-bound states. However, coactivators and corepressors recognize overlapping surfaces of liganded and unliganded NRs, respectively. Here we show that, at sufficiently high concentration, the NR corepressor (NCoR) influences the activity of the liver X receptor (LXR) even in the presence of a potent full agonist that destabilizes NCoR binding.
