Zaprionus indianus is a cosmopolitan drosophilid, of Afrotropical origin, which has recently colonized South America. The sexual dimorphism (SD) of body size is low, males being almost as big as females. We investigated 10 natural populations, 5 from America and 5 from Africa, using the isofemale line technique.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how the number of ovarioles in Drosophila melanogaster varies with developmental temperature across different populations, specifically comparing a temperate French population with two equatorial Congolese populations.
  • Significant differences in genetic variability were found among isofemale lines, peaking at intermediate temperatures, while overall phenotypic variability remained similar across lines and populations, showing an increase at low temperatures.
  • Although the temperature for maximum ovariole count was slightly different between the groups, the results suggest that as D. melanogaster expanded into colder regions, it adapted by increasing ovariole number without significantly altering the trait's response to temperature changes.
