While the impact of heat on physical health is well-known and discussed, researchers, clinicians, and individuals fail to recognize the severity of such heat on one's mental health. Unfortunately, as temperatures are expected to continue rising, the potential consequences of neither recognizing nor effectively responding to this relation between mental health and extreme heat can prove disastrous to the world's health. Further, no prior publication has ever provided an extensive review of this mental health vulnerability.

Emerging adulthood is a period of significant exploration, transformation, variability, and growth. Simultaneously, this developmental period presents unique challenges as emerging adults work to achieve developmental milestones including self-identity formation, the establishment of long-term intimate relationships, career advancement, and independence from parents. For those who are vulnerable, this period is also marked by the development of significant mental health problems and associated impairment, which prevents individuals from successfully reaching these developmental milestones.

The beneficial effects of a healthy sleep hygiene and regular physical activity have both been noted in improving psychopathology symptom severity. No study to date however, has evaluated the potential therapeutic effects of both sleep and exercise simultaneously in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. To examine the two variables concurrently, in the present report, patients with diagnoses of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (n = 64), were administered assessments that measured both their physical activity and sleep-related behaviors.
