The recently emerged PRRSV 1-4-4 L1C variant (L1C.5) was in vivo and in vitro characterized in this study in comparison with three other contemporary 1-4-4 isolates (L1C.1, L1A, and L1H) and one 1-7-4 L1A isolate.

Background: Fetal supraventricular tachycardia is a relatively uncommon cardiac rhythm abnormality which is often associated with adverse perinatal outcomes if untreated. Although there are several treatment modalities and protocols in use globally, there is no consensus as to the most effective antiarrhythmic to manage this condition.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate perinatal outcomes following prenatal maternal therapy for fetal supraventricular tachycardia.

Background And Aims: Bag mask ventilation (BMV) allows for oxygenation and ventilation of patients until a definitive airway is secured and when definitive airway is difficult/impossible. This study hypothesised that the EO (thumb and index finger form a O shape around the mask) technique of mask holding provides better mask seal with the novices compared to the classic EC clamp technique (thumb and index finger form a C shape around the mask).

Methods: Sixty patients participated in this double blinded, prospective, crossover study.

At least two genetically different porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) strains have been identified in the USA: US PEDV prototype and S-INDEL-variant strains. The objective of this study was to compare the pathogenicity differences of the US PEDV prototype and S-INDEL-variant strains in conventional neonatal piglets under experimental infections. Fifty PEDV-negative 5-day-old pigs were divided into five groups of ten pigs each and were inoculated orogastrically with three US PEDV prototype isolates (IN19338/2013, NC35140/2013 and NC49469/2013), an S-INDEL-variant isolate (IL20697/2014), and virus-negative culture medium, respectively, with virus titres of 104 TCID50 ml- 1, 10 ml per pig.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) was identified in the United States (U.S.) swine population for the first time in April 2013 and rapidly spread nationwide.

An unusual anatomic configuration of segmental tracheal agenesis/atresia with esophageal duplication on autopsy in a fetus that demised in utero at 29 weeks is reported. The mother was scanned initially for a cardiac anomaly at 20 weeks and on follow-up scan at 27 weeks had polyhydramnios and underwent amnioreduction. The final autopsy diagnosis was vertebral, ano-rectal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal, renal, and limb malformations (VACTERL).

We report a case of an iatrogenic congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) following left pleuroamniotic shunting at 20 weeks gestation for severe left pleural effusion. The infant developed respiratory difficulty after birth and was diagnosed with left CDH on imaging with the intraoperative findings confirming the hernia to be at an unusual site and likely secondary to the shunting.

Background And Aims: Utility of gabapentin for pre-operative anxiolysis as compared to commonly administered alprazolam is not evident. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of pre-operative oral gabapentin 600 mg, alprazolam 0.5 mg or a placebo on pre-operative anxiety along with post-operative pain and morphine consumption.

Introduction: It is unclear whether women with a low-lying placenta (not overlapping the internal cervical os) at the mid-trimester scan need follow-up. The aim of the study was to determine the rate of placenta praevia, vasa praevia and cord prolapse in the third trimester in this cohort of women.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of women with a documented low-lying placenta (<30 mm from the internal cervical os) at the mid-trimester morphology ultrasound scan was done.

Penoscrotal transposition is a rare congenital abnormality. We report a case presenting prenatally with ambiguous genitalia and renal anomaly on obstetric ultrasound and fetal MRI and discuss the postnatal examination and autopsy findings. We present a review of the literature, including associated gene abnormalities.

Introduction: Cervical length measurement by transvaginal scanning (TVS) has been proposed by some as a universal screening test for preterm labour. The presence of prominent cervical mucous may affect assessment of the cervix; however, the exact technique to measure the cervix when there is prominent mucous or funnelling has not been described. We evaluated the level of agreement in cervical length measurements amongst Australian specialists and sonographers reporting on cervical assessment using an online survey.

Escobar syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by flexion joint and digit contractures, skin webbing, cleft palate, deformity of spine and cervical spine fusion. Associated difficult airway is mainly due to micrognathia, retrognathia, webbing of neck and limitation of the mouth opening and neck extension. We report a case of a 1 year old child with Escobar syndrome posted for bilateral hamstrings to quadriceps transfer.

Pheochromocytoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor of childhood. We present a 14-year-old boy with bilateral pheochromocytoma, post nephrectomy in view of a non-functioning kidney presenting with severe hypertension and end organ damage. Diagnosis was confirmed with 24-hour urinary VMA, catechol amines, and CT scan.

Introduction: The management of primary fetal pleural effusion remains a challenge for clinicians given the paucity of clinical information to guide practice.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective descriptive study of cases referred for management to our fetal therapy center over a 10-year period. Survival to hospital discharge was evaluated against case characteristics and prenatal intervention.

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is rare, chronic progressive, pan-endarteritis involving the aorta and its main branches, with a specific predilection for young Asian women. Anaesthesia for TA patients is complicated by their severe uncontrolled hypertension, extreme arterial blood pressure differentials, aortic regurgitation (AR), end-organ dysfunction, stenosis/aneurysms of major blood vessels and difficulties encountered in monitoring arterial blood pressure. We present the usefulness of ultrasound during anaesthetic management of a 35-year-old woman posted for emergency caesarean section due to intra-uterine growth retardation, foetal tachycardia in active labour, who was already diagnosed to have TA along with moderate AR and uncontrolled hypertension, using epidural technique.

Tracheal compression due to any cause can lead to difficulty in either ventilating or intubating the patient. Most often, it is due to a large thyroid swelling. Often the anesthetist is completely guided by the radiological findings to plan the airway management, giving much less importance to the patient's clinical picture.

Congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) is a rare congenital anomaly of lung causing over aeration of one or more lobes of a histologically normal lung. It presents in infancy with respiratory distress due to compression atelectasis and often associated with mediastinal shift and hypotension. CLE poses a challenge in diagnosis and positive pressure ventilation due to air trapping.
