Globally, siltation of water reservoirs is a major risk and cost to the provision of fresh water. Therefore, managing reservoir sedimentation is a significant task for water management agencies. In Kenya, the Ruiru water reservoir, one of four water reservoirs supplying Nairobi with drinking water has experienced a significant loss of volume since construction in 1949.

Spatial occurrence and variation of the active pharmaceutical compounds in rivers and groundwater systems in Arusha City, Tanzania.

This study investigated the occurrence of 11 pharmaceutical compounds in the rivers and groundwater systems of Arusha City, Tanzania. Each suspected individual residue of active pharmaceutical compounds in water matrices, was pre-concentrated using solid-phase extraction techniques and, then quantified using a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). The concentrations varied across the assessed rivers and groundwater systems.

The changes in landscape structure and functioning due to unprecedented human interference are hastening across the globe and it is thus a compelling necessity to preserve and restore our ecosystems.
