Exploring knowledge of first aid in epistaxis-25 years on.

Background: Epistaxis is the most common acute disorder managed by ENT services. A 1998 survey (Strachan and England) demonstrated widespread ignorance of correct first aid amongst the public with only 11% of respondents applying correct first aid techniques. Here we repeated and expanded the 1998 study to investigate whether understanding of correct first aid in epistaxis amongst the public and emergency department staff has improved in the last 25 years.

Thyroid teratoma in a newborn.

A newborn girl presenting with respiratory distress soon after birth was found to have a neck mass and required transfer to a paediatric intensive care unit with neonatal expertise. She subsequently underwent endoscopic airway assessment with microlaryngoscopy and bronchoscopy proceeding to open excision of the lesion in the right thyroid lobe on day thirteen of life, resulting in resolution of airway compromise and complete pathological clearance. The baby was discharged 10 days after surgery.

Relapsing polychondritis: a clinical review for rheumatologists.

Relapsing polychondritis (RPC) is a rare autoimmune rheumatic disorder that is traditionally classified as a systemic vasculitis. It is characterized by inflammation of cartilage, and typical presenting features include chondritis of the nasal bridge, auricular chondritis, ocular inflammation and involvement of the bronchial tree. Its rarity often leads to considerable delay in establishing a diagnosis and poses a significant management challenge to clinicians, as no conventional guidelines exist.

Analysis of primary visual cortex in dementia with Lewy bodies indicates GABAergic involvement associated with recurrent complex visual hallucinations.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) patients frequently experience well formed recurrent complex visual hallucinations (RCVH). This is associated with reduced blood flow or hypometabolism on imaging of the primary visual cortex. To understand these associations in DLB we used pathological and biochemical analysis of the primary visual cortex to identify changes that could underpin RCVH.
