Pars plana vitrectomy for posteriorly dislocated intraocular lenses: risk factors and surgical approach.

Purpose: To present updated risk factors, anatomical and visual outcomes and a surgical approach to posteriorly dislocated intraocular lenses (IOL).

Methods: A retrospective case series review of patients presenting with posteriorly dislocated IOL to the vitreous was performed. All cases were managed surgically with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) followed by IOL repositioning and refixation or IOL exchange.

Lamellar Macular Holes Associated with End-Stage Exudative Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Background: Reports of lamellar macular holes (LMHs) with underlying age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are rare, and the specific definition, pathogenesis and surgical recommendations for this macular condition remain unclear.

Objectives: To present a series of LMHs in eyes with underlying end-stage AMD, and describe optical coherence tomography (OCT) detection of associated morphologic abnormalities.

Methods: We reviewed the files of consecutive patients diagnosed with LMH and underlying end-stage AMD between September 2007 and September 2011.

Orbital cellulitis following silicone-sponge scleral buckles.

Background: Acute or chronic infection of the scleral explant is rare. We report seven cases of scleral explant infections that caused orbital cellulitis.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective chart review of oculoplastics at oculoplastics and vitreo-retinal units in a secondary referral hospital.

Persistent elevation of intraocular pressure following intravitreal injection of bevacizumab.

Background: The number of patients treated with intravitreal injections has increased significantly over the past few years, mainly following the introduction of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor antibody intraocular drugs. Bevacizumab is mostly used in this group of medications.

Objectives: To describe persistent elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) following intravitreal injection of bevacizumab.

Toward earlier detection of choroidal neovascularization secondary to age-related macular degeneration: multicenter evaluation of a preferential hyperacuity perimeter designed as a home device.

Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of a home device preferential hyperacuity perimeter to discriminate between patients with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and the secondary purpose was to investigate the dependence of sensitivity on lesion characteristics.

Methods: All participants were tested with the home device in an unsupervised mode. The first part of this work was retrospective using tests performed by patients with intermediate AMD and newly diagnosed CNV.

Treatment of total exudative retinal detachment due to central retinal vein occlusion by intravitreal bevacizumab in a patient with p-ANCA vasculitis.

Objective: To report on the use of intravitreal bevacizumab (an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF] monoclonal antibody) as treatment of diffuse exudative retinal detachment due to ischemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).

Design: Interventional case report.

Patient: A 27-year old woman on peritoneal dialysis because of end stage renal failure (ESRF) due to perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (p-ANCA) associated vasculitis presented with acute unilateral blurred vision.

Topical brimonidine reduces collateral damage caused by laser photocoagulation for choroidal neovascularization.

Purpose: To evaluate the neuroprotective efficacy of brimonidine applied topically to the eyes of patients undergoing laser treatment for extrafoveal or juxtafoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV).

Method: In this prospective, controlled, double-masked pilot study, 20 eyes were randomized to receive either brimonidine 0.2% (study group, 11 eyes) or placebo (matched control group, 9 eyes).

Is serum ferritin high in patients with diabetic retinopathy? A controlled study.

It is suggested that an excessive absorption and storage of dietary iron might contribute in the pathogenesis of type II diabetes mellitus and its complications. However, previous studies had methodological problems including design, lack of matched controls and unspecified inclusion criteria. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between diabetic retinopathy and serum ferritin levels in well-defined diabetic patients and controls.
