Background: Optimal medical therapy (OMT) is a modifiable factor that decreases mortality and cardiovascular events in patients with severe peripheral arterial disease. We hypothesized that preintervention OMT would be associated with improved 1-year reintervention and major adverse limb event (MALE) rates after elective endovascular revascularization for intermittent claudication (IC).

Methods: Using the Vascular Quality Initiative (2010-2020), we identified patients with IC undergoing elective endovascular, hybrid, and open surgical interventions.

Background ATP-sensitive potassium channels are inhibited by ATP and open during metabolic stress, providing endogenous myocardial protection. Pharmacologic opening of ATP potassium channels with diazoxide preserves myocardial function following prolonged global ischemia, making it an ideal candidate for use during cardiac surgery. We hypothesized that diazoxide would reduce myocardial stunning after regional ischemia with subsequent prolonged global ischemia, similar to the clinical situation of myocardial ischemia at the time of revascularization.

We monitored physical-chemical conditions in the North Fork of Clear Creek in Colorado (USA) before, during, and after the start of remediation (lime treatment) to remove metals from two major inputs of acid mine drainage (AMD) water. In addition, we analyzed historical monitoring data that extended back more than two decades. Inflammation plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD), however the impact of anti-inflammatory therapies to reduce those processes which promote atherosclerosis in CAD patients is unknown. We aimed to test the hypothesis that anti-inflammatory approaches improve impaired coronary endothelial function (CEF), a driver of coronary atherosclerosis, in stable CAD patients. The present study assessed target engagement, preliminary efficacy, and feasibility as primary outcomes of a free multi-session online cognitive bias modification of interpretation (CBM-I) intervention for anxiety in a large community sample. High trait anxious participants (N = 807) were randomly assigned to a CBM-I condition: 1) Positive training (90% positive-10% negative); 2) 50% positive-50% negative training; or 3) no-training control. We reviewed the literature on toxicity of nanoparticulate nickel (nano-Ni) to aquatic organisms, from the perspective of relevance and reliability in a regulatory framework. Our main findings were 1) much of the published nano-Ni toxicity data is of low or medium quality in terms of reporting key physical-chemical properties, methodologies, and results, compared with published dissolved nickel studies; and 2) based on the available information, some common findings about nanoparticle (NP) toxicity are not supported for nano-Ni. First, we concluded that nanoparticulate elemental nickel and nickel oxide, which differ in chemical composition, generally did not differ in their toxicity.
