Tibial shaft fractures - to monitor or not? a multi-centre 2 year comparative study assessing the diagnosis of compartment syndrome in patients with tibial diaphyseal fractures.

Aims: The aim of this study was to compare the outcome in patients who did and did not undergo continuous compartment pressure monitoring (CCPM) following a tibial diaphyseal fracture.

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 287 patients with an acute tibial diaphyseal fractures who presented to three centres over a two-year period. Demographic data, diagnosis, management, wound closure, complications, and subsequent surgeries were recorded.

A cadaveric study investigating the role of the anterior inferior tibio-fibular ligament and the posterior inferior tibio-fibular ligament in ankle fracture syndesmosis stability.

Background: This cadaveric study aimed to investigate the role AITFL and PITFL have on preventing talar shift in ankle fractures, as well as investigating the role of AITFL reconstruction in preventing talar shift.

Methods: Twelve lower limb cadavers were used. Talar shift was measured following: Step 1- no ligaments cut; Step 2- entire deltoid ligament division; Step 3- group A (5 specimens) PITFL cut whilst group B (7 specimens) AITFL cut; Step 4- group A had AITFL divided whilst group B had PITFL cut.

Acute Achilles tendon rupture: Do cast boots produce adequate equinus when used for functional rehabilitation?

Acute Achilles tendon rupture is frequently treated conservatively using functional rehabilitation protocols in which the ankle is held in equinus. Equinus is achieved using a variety of means including equinus casts and rigid boots with heel wedges. Concerns have been raised that rigid boots with heel wedges do not achieve adequate equinus.

Surgical and psychiatric profile of patients who self-harm by burning in a regional burn unit over an 11-year period.

Introduction: Patients admitted to hospital for deliberate self-harm by burning (DSHB) provide a challenge for medical, surgical and psychological management. We retrospectively reviewed all the patients admitted to a Scottish regional burn unit with DSHB over an 11-year period to assess demographics and outcome.

Methods: Ward admission data were used to identify DSHB patients admitted to the South East Scotland regional burn unit in Livingston, UK between 2002 and 2012, as well as a control group of accidental burn patients.
