Deadly Aspiration Pneumonia Secondary to Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome.

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is a rare and unusual disease, suspected clinically and confirmed radiologically. It represents a duodenal obstruction secondary to the impingement of the third portion of the duodenum between the abdominal aorta (AA) and the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) due to decreased intraabdominal fat. High morbidity and mortality rates are linked to missed or late diagnosis that can lead to complications, such as gastric perforation and gastric hemorrhage.

Resistome Diversity and Dissemination of WHO Priority Antibiotic Resistant Pathogens in Lebanese Estuaries.

Unlabelled: Anthropogenic pressure is known to be a key driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) dissemination in the environment. Especially in lower income countries, with poor infrastructure, the level of AMR dissemination is high. Therefore, we assessed the levels and diversity of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in Lebanese rivers at estuaries' sites ( = 72) of the Mediterranean Sea in spring 2017 and winter 2018.

Background: Current WHO's recommendation for optimal infant feeding advises exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months. After this initial period, infants should receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary food starting from the age of 6 months with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond.

Purpose: This study examined the timing and types of fluids and foods first introduced in a representative sample of toddlers (n = 1051) from 79 daycares across Lebanon.

Factors associated with empathy among community pharmacists in Lebanon.

Introduction: Empathy is the cornerstone of the relationship between the healthcare provider and the patient. In Lebanon, no studies have investigated the factors associated with empathy among community pharmacists. Hence, the importance of this research to better understand empathy and help community pharmacists with this vital aspect of their practice.

Whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing in chronic lymphocytic leukemia: new biomarkers to target.

Many biomarkers indicate prognosis in chronic lymphocytic leukemia; such as fluorescence hybridization testing: 17p or 11q deletions have a worse prognosis than trisomy 12, 13q deletion or normal result, or the mutational status of the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGHV): unmutated IGHV have a worse prognosis than mutated IGHV. Recently, many gene mutations (,  etc.,) have been linked to a worse prognosis.

Factors associated with quality of life among community pharmacists in Lebanon: results of a cross-sectional study.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the quality of life and the factors associated with it among community pharmacists in Lebanon.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out between March and July 2018, enrolling 435 pharmacists, using a proportionate random sample of community pharmacies from all districts of Lebanon. The validated Arabic translation of the Short-Form 12 (SF12v2) was used to derive 2 summary scores: physical and mental component summaries (PCS and MCS).

Urging medical students to publish: Advantages, disadvantages and new challenges.

As soon as they get accepted into medical school, students find themselves facing numerous expectations: coping with tremendous study burden, competing with others for the best rank, completing internships and participating in the race for publishing are only to name a few. This big juggle makes it hard for the medical student to focus on research. It is often easier to postpone publication and involvement in research to "later".

ALK-rearranged adenocarcinoma transformed to small-cell lung cancer: a new entity with specific prognosis and treatment?

Driving molecular mutations such as rearrangement of ALK and EGFR mutation is present in 5-10% of non-small-cell lung cancer. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors have shown good efficacy and thus become the standard of care. However, tumors have developed several resistance mechanisms against tyrosine kinase inhibitors, including transformation to small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC).

Adherence to systemic therapies for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases in Lebanon: a physicians' survey from three medical specialties.

Background: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are chronic conditions that may cause tissue damage and disability, reduced quality of life and increased mortality. Various treatments have been developed for IMIDs, including immune modulators and targeted biologic agents. However, adherence remains suboptimal.

Novel adenoviral vector induces T-cell responses despite anti-adenoviral neutralizing antibodies in colorectal cancer patients.

First-generation, E1-deleted adenovirus subtype 5 (Ad5)-based vectors, although promising platforms for use as cancer vaccines, are impeded in activity by naturally occurring or induced Ad-specific neutralizing antibodies. Ad5-based vectors with deletions of the E1 and the E2b regions (Ad5 [E1-, E2b-]), the latter encoding the DNA polymerase and the pre-terminal protein, by virtue of diminished late phase viral protein expression, were hypothesized to avoid immunological clearance and induce more potent immune responses against the encoded tumor antigen transgene in Ad-immune hosts. Indeed, multiple homologous immunizations with Ad5 [E1-, E2b-]-CEA(6D), encoding the tumor antigen carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), induced CEA-specific cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses with antitumor activity in mice despite the presence of preexisting or induced Ad5-neutralizing antibody.

Isolation of the first metallo-beta-lactamase producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in Lebanon.

Introduction: A 58 year-old man was admitted to the Saint Joseph Hospital-Raymond and Aida Najjar polyclinic in Beirut on July 17, 2007 to undergo surgery for a moderately differentiated colonic adenocarcinoma (T3N0). Following several discharges and re-admissions, an extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli susceptible to imipenem was isolated. The patient was put on imipenem and metronidazole.

[Endoscopic resection of large pedunculated colonic polyps using Endoloop. Three case reports and review of the literature].

Endoscopic polypectomy is now an established procedure for the resection of colorectal polyps. One of the serious complications associated with colonoscopic polypectomy is hemorrhage. Several factors appear to be associated with increased risk of hemorrhage including patient age and colorectal polyp size, location, and morphology (thick stalk or sessile).

Percutaneous endoscopic gastro-duodenostomy: modified technique.

Objectives: Percutaneous endoscopic gastro-jejunostomy is appropriate for patients with severe neurologic deficit to avoid repeated tube feeding-related aspiration. We describe a modified technique of endoscopic gastro-duodenostomy.

Patients And Methods: This technique was performed in 9 patients with severe neurologic deficit.

Acromioplasty for impingement with an intact rotator cuff.

This is a retrospective review of 108 patients who underwent decompressive anterior acromioplasty for chronic impingement in the absence of a full thickness rotator cuff tear. Before operation, all the patients had had shoulder pain for at least one year despite conservative treatment. At operation, the rotator cuff tendons were explored and were intact.

Impingement syndrome in the athletic shoulder.

The repetitive overhead use of the arm required by many sports may lead to impingement in the vulnerable avascular region of the supraspinatus and biceps tendons. The impingement syndrome may spill over at any time to involve the adjacent biceps tendon, subacromial bursa, and acromioclavicular joint and, as a continuum, with the passage of time, may eventuate in degeneration and partial, even complete thickness, rotator cuff tears later in life. Physical findings, particularly a positive impingement sign, confirm the diagnosis.
