In low and middle-income countries, a large proportion of animal rabies investigations end without a conclusive diagnosis leading to epidemiologic interpretations informed by clinical, rather than laboratory data. We compared Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) with Logistic Regression (LR) for their ability to estimate the probability of rabies in animals investigated as part of an Integrated Bite Case Management program (IBCM). To balance our training data, we used Random Oversampling (ROS) and Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique.

The predominant research publishing system is not equitable by design, nor optimised to advance research to create knowledge and ultimately to benefit society. Open Research Central (ORC) was created to foster the re-imagination of the research dissemination system to facilitate trust, transparency and equitable participation. In five years of operation, before dissolving, the non-profit organisation produced outputs and learnings valuable to the development of a responsible research dissemination system.

Introduction: There are disparities in child mental health treatment access and treatment retention in terms of race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), and insurance coverage. Institutions have invested in the integrated primary care (IPC) treatment model with the goal of improving treatment access and promoting child mental health equity.

Objective: This study compared treatment attendance in an outpatient psychiatry clinic (OPC) versus an IPC clinic to assess whether the IPC was associated with reduced disparities in access to care and treatment retention.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder with lifelong impairments. ADHD-related behaviors have been observed as early as toddlerhood for children who later develop ADHD. Children with ADHD have disrupted connectivity in neural circuitry involved in executive control of attention, including the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and dorsal attention network (DAN).

Following administration of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, many women worldwide reported short-term menstrual irregularities. Although menstrual bleeding, "the fifth vital sign", is experienced by more than 300 million people on any given day worldwide, these changes were only partially studied. Irregular periods are important well beyond fertility and the discomfort they impose; they are associated with the risk of cardiovascular morbidity, chronic diseases, and premature mortality.

Research Question: What is the involvement of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), expressed in granulosa cells, in folliculogenesis?

Design: mRNA expression of PEDF and other key factors [Cyp19, anti-Müllerian hormone receptor (AMHR) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)] in mice follicles was examined in order to typify the expression of PEDF in growing follicles and in human primary granulosa cells (hpGC), and to follow the interplay between PEDF and the other main players in folliculogenesis: FSH and AMH.

Results: mRNA expression of PEDF increased through folliculogenesis, although the pattern differed from that of the other examined genes, affecting the follicular angiogenic and oxidative balance. In hpGC, prolonged exposure to FSH stimulated the up-regulation of PEDF mRNA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the concept of "helicopter parenting" specifically focusing on adolescents with ADHD to assess how over-involved parenting affects their transition into adulthood.
  • Researchers adapted a measure of helicopter parenting for this demographic and analyzed responses from 333 adolescents and their parents to determine its validity.
  • Results revealed two main components of parenting styles—Parental Intervention and Day-to-Day Monitoring—which varied based on the adolescents' age and demographic factors, suggesting that parenting approaches are not uniform across different backgrounds.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention and/or impulsivity/hyperactivity. ADHD, especially when persisting into adulthood, often includes emotional dysregulation, such as affect lability; however, the neural correlates of emotionality in adults with heterogeneous ADHD symptom persistence remain unclear.

Methods: The present study sought to determine shared and distinct functional neuroanatomical profiles of neural circuitry during emotional interference resistance using the emotional face n-back task in adult participants with persisting (n = 47), desisting (n = 93), or no (n = 42) childhood ADHD symptoms while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Tandem repeats (TRs) represent one of the largest sources of genetic variation in humans and are implicated in a range of phenotypes. Here we present a deep characterization of TR variation based on high coverage whole genome sequencing from 3550 diverse individuals from the 1000 Genomes Project and H3Africa cohorts. We develop a method, EnsembleTR, to integrate genotypes from four separate methods resulting in high-quality genotypes at more than 1.

Public health departments have important roles to play in addressing the local health impacts of climate change, yet are often not well prepared to do so. The Climate and Health Program (CHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created the Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework in 2012 as a five-step planning framework to support public health departments and their partners to respond to the health impacts of climate change. CHP has initiated a process to revise the framework to address learnings from a decade of experience with BRACE and advances in the science and practice of addressing climate and health.

Background: Disturbed sleep during early childhood predicts social-emotional problems. However, it is not known how various early childhood sleep phenotypes are associated with the development of childhood psychopathology, nor whether these relationships vary as a function of parental psychopathology. We identified sleep phenotypes among preschool youth; examined whether these phenotypes were associated with child and parent factors; and determined if early sleep phenotypes predicted later childhood psychopathology.

Article Synopsis
  • Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM) in Haiti involves a multi-sectoral approach to manage animal bites and reduce rabies deaths, transitioning from paper-based methods (pIBCM) established in 2013 to an electronic app (eIBCM) introduced in 2018.
  • An evaluation of both systems from January 2013 to August 2019 compared their data quality, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency, revealing significant improvements in eIBCM, such as faster data transmission and increased data variables collected per investigation.
  • eIBCM was found to be more cost-effective ($1,247 per death averted) and efficient compared to pIBCM ($2,692 per death averted), with 100% of
