Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) affecting deer (Odocoileus spp.), moose (Alces alces), and Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni). Leucine homozygosity at elk PRNP codon 132 has been associated with reduced CWD susceptibility.
