Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate whether the potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use is a predictor for mortality in a community-based population of older adults.

Methods: A cohort study was performed between January 1, 1997, and December 31, 2011, based on data from a representative sample of the population aged 60 years or older living in Bambuí, Brazil. Univariate and multivariate analyses of the association between the variable of interest (use of PIM or pharmacological groups of PIM) and mortality were based on the extended Cox model for proportional hazards.

Numerous studies have associated the apolipoprotein E (apoE) ε4 allele with worse health status, but few have assessed the existence of genotype-dependent variations in functional performance. Among participants in the Bambuí Health and Aging Study, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, 1,408 elderly underwent apoE genotyping. Functionality was assessed with a questionnaire, and individuals were classified as dependent in basic activities of daily living (BADLs), instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), and mobility.

This study explored the association between energy expenditure during physical activity and the Framingham risk score in the elderly. This was a cross-sectional study with a sample of 1,473 older adults. The dependent variable was level of physical activity, estimated by the metabolic equivalents in tertiles.

The study objective is to examine the role of African genome origin on baseline and 11-year blood pressure trajectories in community-based ethnoracially admixed older adults in Brazil. Data come from 1272 participants (aged ≥60 years) of the Bambui cohort study of aging during 11 years of follow-up. Outcome measures were systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and hypertension control.

This study examined the factors associated with antidepressant use among community-dwelling elderly individuals. Data collected from the Bambuí Project, a population-based study on aging and health with a cohort of 1,606 elderly individuals, were used. Gender, age, education, marital status, household income and cohabitation status were the sociodemographic characteristics investigated.

The scope of this study was to understand the significance that community health agents attribute to the home visit conducted with families with frail elderly individuals and if the technique has served as a tool for care for this group. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with community health agents in the city of Bambui in the State of Minas Gerais. They were all recorded, transcribed and analyzed.

This article seeks to understand the significance attributed by the elderly in the community to their experiences of pain based on the approach given to pain in collective health practices. The survey adopts a qualitative approach of an anthropological nature, grounded on the prerequisites of ethnography. Individual interviews were held, using a semi-structured script, with a universe of 57 elderly people.

Aging of the population profoundly changes the scope of action of public health, altering the profile of morbidity-mortality and increasing the demand for chronic care. In the aging population, disability serves as an indicator of health and a guideline for actions and policies. This enquiry, with a qualitative approach, based on interpretative anthropology and the emic perspective, aims to understand the way of thinking and acting of old people in the face of 'old age with disability' and their relationships with public health.

Background: Self-rated health (SRH) has strong predictive value for mortality in different contexts and cultures, but there is inconsistent evidence on ethnoracial disparities in SRH in Latin America, possibly due to the complexity surrounding ethnoracial self-classification.

Materials/methods: We used 370,539 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) to examine the association between individual genomic proportions of African, European and Native American ancestry, and ethnoracial self-classification, with baseline and 10-year SRH trajectories in 1,311 community dwelling older Brazilians. We also examined whether genomic ancestry and ethnoracial self-classification affect the predictive value of SRH for subsequent mortality.

The goals of this study were to identify how community-dwelling elderly deal with the prospect of disability/functionality and to understand how the sociocultural context modulates this process. The study adopted a qualitative approach in which the signs, meanings, and actions model was used in the data collection and analysis. The study interviewed 57 elders ranging from 61 to 96 years of age and enrolled in the six primary health units in Bambuí, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

OBJECTIVE To analyze the perception of and motivation for the chronic use of benzodiazepine among older adults. METHODS A qualitative study was conducted on 22 older adults living in Bambuí, MG, Southeastern Brazil, who were taking benzodiazepines and had the clinical and cognitive ability to respond to interview questions. The collected data were analyzed on the basis of the "signs, meanings, and actions" model.

OBJECTIVE To analyze the trends and factors associated with the antidepressant use among older adults. METHODS This population-based study evaluated older adults in 1997 (n = 351, baseline) and the survivors at the 15th follow-up year (n = 462, in 2012) among the aging cohort of Bambuí. The prevalence of antidepressant use was estimated, and the most commonly used antidepressants each year were identified.

Objective: Bipolar disorder (BD) is common in clinical psychiatric practice, and several studies have estimated its prevalence to range from 0.5 to 5% in community-based samples. However, no systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of BD type 1 and type 2 has been published in the literature.

Objective: To investigate the association between physical activity (eg, energy expenditure) and survival over 11 years of follow-up in a large representative community sample of older Brazilian adults with a low level of education. Furthermore, we assessed sex as a potential effect modifier of this association.

Materials And Methods: A population-based prospective cohort study was conducted on all the ≥60-year-old residents in Bambuí city (Brazil).

Objective: We aim to evaluate the incidence rate and predictors of clinically significant depressive symptoms (CSDS) over 10 years of follow-up from a population-based cohort study (the Bambui Cohort Study of Aging).

Methods: We calculated the predictors of incidence of CSDS over 10 years of follow-up by the Cox proportional regression analysis. Depressive symptoms were evaluated by GHQ-12 and scores of five or higher indicated CSDS.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 and the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) dimension in an elderly population, using baseline data from the Bambui (Brazil) Cohort Study of Aging.

Design: We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study.

Setting: The study took place at Bambui city, Minas Gerais State, Southeast Brazil.

In the health field, technologies of care relations are in the scope of the worker-user encounter, implying intersubjectivity with the development of relationships between subjects, resulting in action. Evaluation studies synthesize knowledge produced on the consequences of using these technologies for society. This anthropological study aims to understand the perception of the elderly regarding the resolution capability and effectiveness of the acts produced in health care relationships in the context of the Family Health Strategy (ESF).

Functionality is a crucial dimension of the health of the elderly. The aim of this work is to investigate the elements that comprise the significance of disability for the elderly residents of the city of Bambuí in the state of Minas Gerais. A qualitative approach was adopted in which the model of signs, significance and actions was used in both data collection and analysis.

Background: Increased mortality risk and its moderators is an important, but still under recognized, negative outcome of late-life depression (LLD). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether LLD is a risk factor for all-cause mortality in a population-based study with over 10 years of follow-up, and addressed the moderating effect of gender and symptom severity on mortality risk.

Methods: This analysis used data from the Bambuí Cohort Study of Aging.

In their praxis, health professionals must deal with the grieving of patient, family and staff, but for the elderly anticipated grieving due to disease and the awareness of finitude can be as disturbing as the actual death of someone. This paper seeks to understand anticipated grieving in the interaction between old age and health-disease and disability processes from the viewpoint of the elderly in the community faced with their own finitude. This observational ethnographic study was conducted with 57 elderly people assisted by the Family Health Strategy.
