Article Synopsis
  • Kawasaki disease is a childhood vasculitis treatable with IVIG, which minimizes heart complications and the Egami score is used to identify patients who may not respond to this treatment, proving effective in Japan but not in other populations.
  • A study in Catalonia sought to evaluate the Egami score’s effectiveness on local children with Kawasaki disease, involving a broad patient sample from 33 hospitals over a ten-year period.
  • Results showed the Egami score's low sensitivity (26%) means it fails to reliably predict non-responders in this Western Mediterranean population, leading researchers to conclude it is not a useful tool for predicting IVIG resistance there.

Diatoms are unicellular photosynthetic algae with promise for green production of fuels and other chemicals. Recent genome-editing techniques have greatly improved the potential of many eukaryotic genetic systems, including diatoms, to enable knowledge-based studies and bioengineering. Using a new technique, transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), the gene encoding the urease enzyme in the model diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, was targeted for interruption.
