Pax genes encode an evolutionary conserved group of transcription factors with multiple roles during embryonic development and for cell type specification in normal and malignant tissues of the adult organism. In mice, Pax1 is required for the formation of specific skeletal structures as well as for the development of a fully functional thymus. In humans, the PAX1 locus has been linked to otofaciocervical syndrome, idiopathic scoliosis, and to a higher susceptibility for androgenic alopecia.

Hydrolysis of glucosylceramides by the enzyme glucosylceramide-beta-glucosidase (GlcCer'ase) results in ceramide, a critical component of the intercellular lamellae that mediates the epidermal permeability barrier. A disturbance of ceramide formation is supposed to influence the transepidermal water loss in common skin diseases like atopic eczema or psoriasis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether GlcCer'ase levels were altered in the skin of subjects with psoriasis vulgaris.

The evolutionarily conserved Notch signal transduction pathway regulates cell fate and cellular differentiation in various tissues and has essential functions in embryonic patterning and tumorigenesis. Cell-cell signaling by the Notch pathway is mediated by the interaction of the transmembrane receptor Notch with its ligands Delta or Jagged presented on adjacent cells. Whereas signal transduction to Notch expressing cells has been described, it is unclear whether Delta-dependent signaling may exist within the Delta-expressing cell.

We report two consecutive Caucasian male siblings of nonconsanguineous parents autopsied at 22 and 13 weeks gestational age both with prenatal diagnosis of Jarcho-Levin syndrome (JLS). Segmentation anomalies of the vertebrae and ribs encompass a spectrum of syndromes with or without associated anomalies of other developmental fields, and include spondylothoracic dysostosis (STD), JLS, Casamassima-Morton-Nance (CMN) syndrome, and spondylocostal dysostosis (SCD), among others. In both these new JLS cases the autopsies confirmed that there were severe developmental alterations in the thoracic and vertebral skeleton (including "crab-like" thorax), accompanied in the older fetus by renal defects.

Pax genes encode a family of transcription factors that play key roles in embryonic development. Whereas the functions of Pax genes in the adult organism are largely unknown, upregulated Pax gene expression has been implicated in tumourigenesis. In this study, PAX9-specific monoclonal antibodies have been generated and it has been shown that PAX9 protein is expressed in the normal epithelium of the adult human oesophagus.
