Objectives: To estimate digit circumference and the impact of sex and body mass index (BMI) for the calculation of the Leeds Dactylitis Index (LDI) in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients with bilateral dactylitis.

Methods: Digit circumference of the hands and the foot were measured with a dactylometer and were studied according to sex and BMI (divided in 4 weight categories) in healthy Portuguese subjects, using Student's t-test and One-way ANOVA, respectively. The effect size of sex and BMI were calculated using Cohen's d test and Eta squared, respectively.

  • A study in Portugal aimed to identify barriers to pediatric rheumatology referrals from family doctors and pediatricians, revealing insufficient education and uneven access as key issues.
  • Out of 292 survey responses, only 12% had received specific training on pediatric rheumatology, with pediatricians reporting more experience in referring patients compared to family doctors.
  • The findings highlighted the need for improved education and training as the most effective way to enhance referral patterns, as many doctors opted for alternative specialties rather than pediatric rheumatology.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of Enbrel® and its biosimilar, Benepali®, in patients with active Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA), or Spondyloarthritis (SpA) who had not previously received biologic treatments over a 36-month period.
  • The results showed no significant differences in the persistence rates of treatment between the two groups, with similar proportions of patients achieving remission or low disease activity.
  • The main reason for discontinuing treatment was inefficacy in both groups, and overall, the study concluded that Benepali® is as effective and safe as Enbrel® for these patients.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is frequently regarded by patients and health care providers as a normal consequence of ageing and a minor condition. In contrast, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a pathological condition that usually requires prolonged treatment and regular Rheumatology follow-up. Pain and physical limitations are hallmarks of both conditions and some previous studies suggest that OA and RA may have a similar burden for both groups of patients although those works usually do not take into account the inflammatory activity of RA.

Article Synopsis
  • Shoulder pain accounts for about 30% of consultations in Primary Health Care, with rotator cuff pathology being the most common cause, and ultrasound is an effective diagnostic tool comparable to MRI.
  • The study aimed to identify predictive factors for treatment response and ultrasound findings in patients with shoulder pain, analyzing cases referred to rheumatology after ultrasound evaluations.
  • Results showed that early intervention improves treatment response, while diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were linked to specific rotator cuff lesions; age was the main predictor of ultrasound findings, but no correlation was found between treatment response and sex, occupation, or previous therapies.

Ultrasound-guided core biopsy is a minimally invasive technique able to identify lymphoma accompanying Sjögren syndrome, neoplasms or infiltrative diseases, with less complications compared to open biopsy. With these images, we aim to describe the ultrasound-guided core biopsy procedure, in a female patient with rheumatoid arthritis who presented evident inhomogeneity of the parotid gland. The procedure was performed by rheumatologists, trained in ultrasonography of the salivary glands, demonstrating that ultrasound-guided core biopsy is an easy and safe method to obtain salivary gland tissue.

Background: Switching between biologic therapies is a recommended strategy for Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) patients that show an insufficient response or adverse events. Although the choice of the subsequent biologic may be dependent on many factors, assessing the quality of the switch decision is of utmost relevance.

Objectives: To develop and validate two outcomes measurement tools (for patients with peripheral and axial PsA phenotypes) that address the quality of treatment decisions in PsA regarding the switch of biologic therapies in clinical practice.
