Technical note: AQMEII4 Activity 1: evaluation of wet and dry deposition schemes as an integral part of regional-scale air quality models.

We present in this technical note the research protocol for phase 4 of the Air Quality Model Evaluation International Initiative (AQMEII4). This research initiative is divided into two activities, collectively having three goals: (i) to define the current state of the science with respect to representations of wet and especially dry deposition in regional models, (ii) to quantify the extent to which different dry deposition parameterizations influence retrospective air pollutant concentration and flux predictions, and (iii) to identify, through the use of a common set of detailed diagnostics, sensitivity simulations, model evaluation, and reduction of input uncertainty, the specific causes for the current range of these predictions. Activity 1 is dedicated to the diagnostic evaluation of wet and dry deposition processes in regional air quality models (described in this paper), and Activity 2 to the evaluation of dry deposition point models against ozone flux measurements at multiple towers with multiyear observations (to be described in future submissions as part of the special issue on AQMEII4).

Drug Susceptibility Testing and Synergistic Antibacterial Activity of Curcumin with Antibiotics against Enterotoxigenic .

This study investigated the susceptibility of Enterotoxigenic to curcumin, as well as its synergistic effect with 12 antimicrobial drugs. Our study shows that curcumin did not affect bacterial growth. The antimicrobial susceptibility of curcumin and antibiotic synergy were identified using disc diffusion on Mueller-Hinton agar.

Diagnostic assessment of prosthetic mitral valve thrombosis by real-time three-dimensional transoesophageal echocardiography and successful thrombolytic treatment.

Prosthetic valve thrombosis (PVT) is a rare but serious complication of valve replacement, most often encountered with mechanical prostheses. The different therapeutic modalities for PVT (fibrinolysis with heparin treatment or surgery) will largely be influenced by the presence of valvular obstruction, the valve location (left or right sided), the patient's clinical status, the existence of and expertise in therapeutic modalities at the institution, and the patient's decision. This report describes a patient with thrombosis of a prosthetic mitral valve, which was successfully treated with recombinant streptokinase in a hospital without cardiac surgery.

Acute bronchodilator responsiveness in subjects with and without airflow obstruction in five Latin American cities: the PLATINO study.

Background: Acute bronchodilator responsiveness is an area of discussion in COPD. No information exists regarding this aspect of the disease from an unselected COPD population. We assessed acute bronchodilator responsiveness and factors influencing it in subjects with and without airway obstruction in an epidemiologic sample.

Brown recluse spider venom: proteomic analysis and proposal of a putative mechanism of action.

Loxosceles intermedia spider venom was subjected to proteomic analysis through a MudPIT shot-gun approach to identify the protein composition. Were identified 39 proteins which seem to responsible by the lesion of different types of tissues, to some physiopathological actions and by the prevention of structural damage to the toxin structures.

Two different invasive versus noninvasive strategies in the management of non-ST elevation acute coronary syndromes.

Introduction: Previous studies have evaluated the prognostic impact of early invasive strategies in the management of non-ST elevation acute coronary syndromes (NSTEACS). There is, however, conflicting evidence about the advantages of such an approach. In some studies the benefits are dependent on gender or age, while time to angiography varies between studies.

Impact of a structured intensive follow-up program on the control of hypertension in coronary patients--a randomized trial.

Introduction: Hypertension is an important risk factor for cardiovascular events. Although several anti-hypertensive agents have shown to be effective in the treatment of hypertension, adequate blood pressure control is not frequent in most populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a structured intensive follow-up program (SIFUP) on the control of blood pressure in coronary patients.
