Lessons from the invasion front: Integration of research and management of the lionfish invasion in Brazil.

After successful invasions in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, lionfish (Pterois spp.) have recently invaded another important biogeographical region -the Brazilian Province. In this article, we discuss this new invasion, focusing on a roadmap for urgent mitigation of the problem, as well as focused research and management strategies.

Analysis of a hypersaline drought-prone estuary reveals low density and diversity of fish eggs and larvae.

We analyzed fish eggs and larvae in an estuary under severe drought conditions. We detected an inverse salinity gradient, with values increasing from the mouth to the upper estuary. Egg densities decreased from the estuarine mouth to the upstream areas following the salinity increase for all three mesh net sizes.

Identification and characterization of microsatellite loci in West Atlantic sea cucumber (Selenka 1867).

The sea cucumber has become the subject of intense and unregulated fishing in northeastern Brazil due to their growing demand in Asian market. However, there is little knowledge about the dynamics and genetics of wild populations on the South American coast. In this study, we present the first set of microsatellite markers, identified and characterized using Illumina paired-end reads of whole genome shotgun sequencing.
