Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for hepatitis C, focusing on sustained virologic response (SVR) and serious adverse events among patients in Ceará, Brazil.
  • A total of 1075 patients were analyzed, with a high overall SVR rate of 96.4%; however, those with cirrhosis showed slightly lower SVR rates compared to patients with less severe fibrosis.
  • While DAAs were generally safe, a small percentage (3.5%) of patients experienced serious adverse events, and some decompensated cirrhosis patients faced mortality during treatment.

Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are rare benign monoclonal hepatic tumors that commonly occur in females (3-4 per 100,000 women) due to the use of oral contraceptives, its primary risk factor. Recently, HCAs have been classified into 4 distinct subtypes according to genotypic and phenotypic characteristics and clinical features: inflammatory HCA (40-50%), which are hypervascular with marked peliosis and a tendency to bleed; hepatocyte nuclear factor 1α (HNF1A)-mutated HCA (H-HCA, 30-40%) that are diffusely steatotic and rarely undergo malignant transformation; β-catenin activated HCA (10-15%), which frequently undergo malignant transformation and may seem hepatocellular carcinoma on imaging; and unclassified HCA (10-25%). In this study, we report the case of a 23-year-old female oral contraceptive user with H-HCA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find out how common non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are among morbidly obese patients about to have bariatric surgery and to pinpoint related risk factors.
  • A liver biopsy performed on 60 patients revealed that 95% had NAFLD, with 66.7% diagnosed with NASH; only a small number showed severe liver damage (3 patients with fibrosis).
  • The findings indicate that NAFLD is prevalent in morbidly obese patients, and the enzyme γGT was identified as a key predictor of the level of fat in their livers.

Objective: The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) is higher in patients on hemodialysis than in the general population, probably due to greater exposure to risk situations. The purposes of the study were to determine anti-HCV antibodies prevalence among hemodialysis patients and dialysis clinics and patients factors associated with HCV transmission.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 752 hemodialysis patients in all 12 dialysis clinics of Fortaleza, Brazil, and were screened using third generation ELISA.
