Introducción: la malnutrición en el anciano que ingresa en el hospital es bastante frecuente y condiciona no solo la extensión de la estancia hospitalaria, sino el pronóstico o la aparición de otras patologías. Su valoración puede basarse en medidas antropométricas, parámetros bioquímicosy test nutricionales.Objetivos: valorar si la circunferencia de pantorrilla es un indicador válido de desnutrición en el paciente anciano recién hospitalizado, analizando la posible influencia del sexo y la edad.

Background And Objective: Different publications have analyzed the possible correlation between breastfeeding length and a better cognitive development during school age. The present study evaluates the possible long term beneficial effects of breastfeeding during the first months of life on the cognitive development, as well as its possible role on the attention deficit and hyperactivity prevention. Currently this evaluation is of special interest considering the increasing number in western societies of childhood attention deficits, with or without, hyper - activity disorders.

Some scientific evidence support that a better cognitive development during the school age is related with breastfeeding. In this study, the potential benefit of breastfeeding duration is evaluated, related to Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory and Processing Speed. A total of 103 children, first year of Primary School, six-year-old, (47 boys and 56 girls), were included from different schools in the province of Granada (Spain) at urban, semi-urban and rural areas.

Association between family structure, parental smoking, friends who smoke, and smoking behavior in adolescents with asthma.

Recent investigations show that the smoking prevalence among asthmatic adolescents is higher than among healthy adolescents, and the causes that lead these asthmatic adolescents to smoke are unclear. We investigated the association between family structure, parental smoking, smoking friends, and smoking in asthmatic adolescents (n = 6,487). After adjusting for sex and age, logistic regression analyses showed that nonintact family structure, parental smoking, and smoking friends are associated with smoking in adolescents with and without asthma.
