Chronic urticaria associated with lung adenocarcinoma - a paraneoplastic manifestation: A case report and literature review.

Background: Urticaria is one of the most common causes of emergency room visits. It is defined as an acute inflammatory dermatosis, characterized by localized degranulation of mast cells, with consequent dermal microvascular and formation of edematous and pruritic plaques called hives. Urticaria affects the skin and tissues of the superficial mucosa.

Noise reduction in small-animal PET images using a multiresolution transform.

In this paper, we address the problem of denoising reconstructed small animal positron emission tomography (PET) images, based on a multiresolution approach which can be implemented with any transform such as contourlet, shearlet, curvelet, and wavelet. The PET images are analyzed and processed in the transform domain by modeling each subband as a set of different regions separated by boundaries. Homogeneous and heterogeneous regions are considered.

Trends in digestive cancer mortality, Cuba 1987-2008.

Background: Gastrointestinal malignancies are among the most common cancers suffered by Cubans. The purpose of our study is to analyse the evolution of digestive cancer mortality in Cuba.

Methods: Mortality data for this study were obtained from the National Medical Records and Health Statistic Bureau.

The dopamine D4 receptor gene and moderation of the association between externalizing behavior and IQ.

Background: Dopaminergic neurotransmission is implicated in externalizing behavior problems, such as aggression and hyperactivity. Externalizing behavior is known to be negatively associated with cognitive ability. Activation of dopamine D4 receptors appears to inhibit the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, a brain region implicated in cognitive ability.

Monoamine oxidase inhibition during brain development induces pathological aggressive behavior in mice.

Background: Monoamine oxidase (MAO) is historically a focus of concern in research on impulsive and aggressive behavior. Recent studies in a single kindred with a point mutation in the MAO-A gene, together with phenotypic evaluations of MAO-A knockout mice, have sharpened this interest. The goal of this study was to investigate the behavioral consequences of MAO inhibition during brain development and to determine the extent to which specific effects could be attributed to MAO- A versus MAO-B.
