Purpose: Improper utilization of surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis frequently leads to increased risks of morbidity and mortality. This study aims to understand the common causative organism of postoperative orthopedic infection and document the surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis protocol across various institutions in to order to strengthen surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis practice and provide higher-quality surgical care.

Methods: This multicentric multinational retrospective study, includes 24 countries from five different regions (Asia Pacific, South Eastern Africa, Western Africa, Latin America, and Middle East).

Purpose: This study aimed to obtain a comprehensive view of the risk of developing cancer in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and to compare this risk between patients receiving continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy versus upper airway surgery (UAS).

Methods: We used both local data and a global-scale federated data research network, TriNetX, to access electronic medical records, including those of patients diagnosed with OSA from health-care organizations (HCOs) worldwide. We used propensity score matching and the score-matched analyses of data for 5 years of follow-up, RESULTS: We found that patients who had undergone UAS had a similar risk of developing cancer than those who used CPAP [hazard ratio of 0.

Article Synopsis
  • A recent Letter in the Journal of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery critiques an original study comparing diabetes risk in sleep apnea patients undergoing surgery versus using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).
  • The authors of the original study express gratitude for the critique and want to clarify and discuss the raised issues.
  • The response aims to promote a balanced dialogue regarding the findings of the original research.

Objective: There are no official diagnostic tools to evaluate the weakness of the genioglossus muscle. We have developed a protocol for muscular assessment in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and evaluated its effectiveness.

Study Design: Case and controls prospective study.

Background: Convalescent plasma has been widely used to treat COVID-19 and is under investigation in numerous randomized clinical trials, but results are publicly available only for a small number of trials. The objective of this study was to assess the benefits of convalescent plasma treatment compared to placebo or no treatment and all-cause mortality in patients with COVID-19, using data from all available randomized clinical trials, including unpublished and ongoing trials (Open Science Framework, https://doi.org/10.

: Many patients sensitized to mites remain symptomatic and uncontrolled despite traditional treatment. Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) has demonstrated to reduce the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, the need for additional drug treatments, and to reduce the number of moderate and severe exacerbations in patients with allergic asthma caused by mites that had not been adequately controlled.: After reviewing the most recent literature, a scientific committee composed by five pneumologists experts in asthma proposed 41 items that addressed the diagnosis of allergic asthma caused by mites, the role of house dust mite (HDM) SLIT tablet in the therapeutic plan and in the control of the disease, and the profile of patients with asthma candidates for this therapy.

Background: Myofunctional therapy is currently a reasonable therapeutic option to treat obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). This therapy is based on performing regular exercises of the upper airway muscles to increase their tone and prevent their collapse. Over the past decade, there has been an increasing number of publications in this area; however, to our knowledge, there are no studies focused on patients who can most benefit from this therapy.

We assessed the effectiveness of an asthma educational programme based on a repeated short intervention (AEP-RSI) to improve asthma control (symptom control and future risk) and quality of life. A total of 230 adults with mild-to-moderate persistent uncontrolled asthma participated in a 1-year cluster randomised controlled multicentre study. The AEP-RSI was given in four face-to-face sessions at 3-month intervals, and included administration of a written personalised action plan and training on inhaler technique.

Object: The authors present 1-year results in 60 patients with cervical radiculopathy due to spondylosis and stenosis that was treated with a bilateral percutaneous facet implant. The implant consists of a screw and washer that distracts and immobilizes the cervical facet for root decompression and fusion. Clinical and radiological results are analyzed.

Background: It is unclear whether premenstrual asthma is associated with premenstrual syndrome. The objective of this study is to compare premenstrual symptoms among asthmatic women according to whether they have premenstrual asthma or not.

Methods: A questionnaire on respiratory symptoms during a single menstrual cycle was developed for asthmatics of fertile age, together with another on symptoms related to premenstrual syndrome.

Background: The frequency of atopy in women with premenstrual asthma (PMA) and its possible effect on the premenstrual exacerbation of asthma are unknown.

Objective: To analyze the relation between atopy markers (total IgE, Phadiatop, and specific IgE) and PMA.

Methods: Asthmatic women of reproductive age completed a questionnaire about respiratory symptoms and recorded peak flow during an entire menstrual cycle to be classified as asthmatic patients with or without PMA.

2,6-Dilithio-1,6-heptadienes 3 undergo intramolecular carbolithiation in Et(2)O/N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) at the lithiated double bonds to afford 1,2-bis(lithiomethyl)cyclopentenes 5. Reaction of these dianions with electrophiles affords a number of 1,2-difunctionalized cyclopentene derivatives 7-10. The ease of carbolithiation of 2,6-dilithio-1,6-heptadiene (3a) compared to that of 2-lithio-1,6-heptadiene (14) has been studied experimentally.

Amines, amides and ethers containing 2-arylallyl groups are selectively and easily deprotected with tert-butyllithium. This transformation probably involves a carbolithiation reaction of the styrenyl moiety followed by a beta-elimination process.
