Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance (IR), which is prevalent worldwide and has significant adverse health effects. Metformin is commonly prescribed as a pharmacological treatment. Physical exercise is also recognized as an effective regulator of glycemia, independent of metformin.

A relevant feature of endometriosis is the presence of fibrotic tissue inside and around the lesions, thus contributing to the classic endometriosis-related symptoms, pain, and infertility. The molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of fibrosis in endometriosis are not yet defined.

Therefore, hormonal therapies are currently the most effective treatment. Progestins are considered the first-line approach, especially for a long-term management.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCurrently, tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 account for substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide, not only during their acute phase, but also because of their sequelae. This scoping review aims to describe the specific aspects of post-TB and post-COVID (long-COVID-19) sequelae, and the implications for post-disease follow-up and rehabilitation. In particular, evidence on how to identify patients affected by sequelae is presented and discussed.

This study investigated the effect of 4weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with specific techniques and analyzed inter-individual variability [classified in responders (Rs) and non-responders (NRs)] on jumping ability and change of direction speed (CODS) in youth karate athletes. Athletes of both genders (=10) were randomly assigned into experimental group (EG; =5) and the control group (CG; =5). The EG trained 2-3days per week applying HIIT (three rounds [15 sets of 4s all-out specific efforts with 8s of dynamical pauses] with 3min of recovery between rounds) during their usual training during 4weeks.

This study investigated the effect of 4 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with specific techniques (TS-G) vs. repeated sprints (RS-G) and analyzed the inter-individual variability [classified into responders (Rs) and non-responders (NRs)] on sport-related fitness in taekwondo (TKD) athletes. Athletes of both genders ( = 12) were randomly assigned into TS-G and RS-G groups.

The aim of this research was to compare the effects of a technique-specific high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocol vs. traditional taekwondo training on physical fitness and body composition in taekwondo athletes, as well as to analyse the inter-individual response. Utilising a parallel controlled design, sixteen male and female athletes (five females and 11 males) were randomly divided into an experimental group (EG) that participated in the technique-specific HIIT and a control group (CG) that participated in traditional taekwondo training.

Objective: to describe the nutritional, microbiological properties and costs of: 1) in-home produced pureed food (hTMD); 2) concentrated nutrient-dense commercial food products, hand-blended (cTMD); 3) food prepared using the MixxPro® automatic food mixer (cTMD-Mix). Methods: an observational, prospective study carried out in three geriatric nursing-homes.

Patients And Methods: We analyzed data collected prospectively in a database that included patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent EBUS-TBNA. Prior to EBUS-TBNA, CT and PET were used to define the radiographic N stage and lymph nodes with short axis ≥ 1 cm by CT or with ratio between maximum standardized uptake value (maxSUV), by PET, of lymph node and primary tumor greater than 0.
Although Spain is a developed country, Tuberculosis (TB) was for years a disease with high incidence rates compared to other European countries, a situation that worsened with the HIV/AIDS epidemic and with the increase of immigration. The Spanish Respiratory Society (SEPAR) created in 2004 the Integrated Research Programs (PII) on respiratory diseases, including TB (PII-TB) which has carried out studies related to the five lines of research that it maintains: clinical / epidemiological, microbiological, technological/clinical management, evaluative, and international cooperation. Following the recommendations on the necessity to evaluate health programs made by international organizations, the evaluation of PII-TB was recently carried out, revealing the situation of the main variables of the disease and their evolution over the time that the program has been working.

An imbalance towards mitochondrial fission has been associated with tumor cell proliferation. The aim of this study was to analyze whether pectin modifies the viability of human colon cancer cells and the expression of proteins involved in mitochondrial fusion and fission.

The aim of the present work was to develop a pilot decision tree learning to predict overweight/obesity based on the combination of six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) located in feeding-associated genes. Genotype study was performed in 151 healthy individuals, who were anonymized and randomly selected from the TALAVERA study.

Long-term consequences of cleaning agents on respiratory health are, however, not well described.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate long-term effects of occupational cleaning and cleaning at home on lung function decline and airway obstruction.
Objective: To develop expert-based recommendations on physical activity and exercise for patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA).
Methods: Two discussion groups, one of physical therapists, rehabilitation physicians, and professionals of physical activity and sports, and another of rheumatologists interested in SpA, were held to discuss the results of a survey of rheumatologists on exercise and two focus groups with patients on barriers to exercise. Preliminary recommendations were drafted.
Introduction And Objective: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) isolates are becoming more common. The main objective of our study was to establish the number and diversity of NTM species in our region and their distribution according to the source sample, age and gender of the patients, and to analyse clinically significant isolates.
Methodology: Prospective study of all NTM isolated in Asturias from 2005 to 2012.
Objective: To determine the utility of molecular techniques in the diagnosis of resistance and the extent of resistance to first-line drugs in our region.
Material And Method: From 2004 to 2013, 1,889 strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolated in Asturias, Spain, were studied using phenotypic (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines) and molecular (INNOLiPA RIF-TB; GenotypeMDRplus; GenotypeMDRsl) sensitivity tests.
Results: 1,759 strains (94.
Objective: To analyze the direct and indirect costs of diagnosis and management of tuberculosis (TB) and associated factors.
Patients And Methods: Prospective study of patients diagnosed with TB between September 2014 and September 2015. We calculated direct (hospital stays, visits, diagnostic tests, and treatment) and indirect (sick leave and loss of productivity, contact tracing, and rehabilitation) costs.
Tuberculosis risk is increased in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases receiving any immunosuppressive treatment, notably tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists therapy. Screening for the presence of latent infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and targeted preventive treatment to reduce the risk of progression to TB is mandatory in these patients. This Consensus Document summarizes the current knowledge and expert opinion of biologic therapies including TNF-blocking treatments.

Methods: Prospective multicenter study of adult tuberculosis patients with positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture and antibiogram including first-line drugs in 32 hospitals and one out-patient center of the Spanish Health System between 2010 and 2011.
Biocompatible and biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(HB-co-HHx)] substrates were modified to improve the attachment of porcine urothelial cell culture. The pristine copolymer exhibits excellent mechanical properties to replace the bladder tissue, but its surface lacks chemical functionalities to interact with cells. Thus, wet chemical treatments based on NaOH and ethylenediamine in aqueous [ED(aq)] and isopropanol [ED(isoOH)] media to functionalize the P(HB-co-HHx) films surfaces were compared.
