Phloroglucinol is a key byproduct of gut microbial metabolism that has been widely used as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome. Here, we demonstrate that phloroglucinol tempers macrophage responses to pro-inflammatory pathogens and stimuli. , phloroglucinol administration decreases gut and extraintestinal inflammation in murine models of inflammatory bowel disease and systemic infection.

Although mainly caused by bacterial infections, the aetiological agent often remains unidentified by conventional microbiological culture methods. The aim of this study was to test whether shifts in the bovine mammary gland microbiota can result in initiation or progression of mastitis.

A dataset was constructed with data from 57 flocks and 3 previous projects. A final flock assessment score, previously not included in the dataset, was calculated and used as the benchmarking assessment classifier (pass/fail).

Pre-mRNA AS consists of the removal of introns and the assembly of exons contained in eukaryotic genes. AS events can influence transcript stability or structure with important physiological consequences.

Most of the GWAS-identified SNPs are in non-coding regions. Connecting these non-coding variants and downstream affected genes is a challenge and, up to date, only a few functional mutations or expression quantitative loci (cis-eQTLs) associated with PTB susceptibility have been identified.

A long-run surveillance study was conducted in animals from different age groups in five dairy cattle farms to investigate the within-farm diversity and transmission dynamics of resistant Campylobacter throughout time. The resistance phenotype of the circulating isolates (170 C.

Tick saliva proteins are instrumental for survival of both the vector and spirochete and have been investigated as targets for vaccine targeting the vector. In Europe, the main vector for Lyme borreliosis is Ixodes ricinus, which predominantly transmits Borrelia afzelii.

Twelve samplings were performed over a period of 16 months, collecting rectal feces from apparently healthy animals in three age groups (calves, heifers, and lactating cows) that were subjected to selective isolation in cefotaxime-containing media. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined by broth microdilution for 197 cefotaxime-resistant (1-3 isolates per age group and sampling date), and 41 of them were selected for long-read whole-genome sequencing.

A shotgun metagenomic approach was used to survey the resistome risk in five dairy cow farms. To this purpose, 10 environmental compartments were sampled: 3 of them linked to productive cows (fresh slurry, stored slurry, slurry-amended pasture soil); 6 of them to non-productive heifers and dry cows (faeces, fresh manure, aged manure, aged manure-amended orchard soil, vegetables-lettuces and grazed soil); and, finally, unamended control soil.

However, the mechanisms by which mononuclear phagocytes, specifically monocytes/macrophages, cope with these usually pro-inflammatory signals are poorly understood. Here, we show that innate immune memory promotes anti-inflammatory homeostasis, using as model strains of the commensal bacterium .
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWhile a structural description of the molecular mechanisms guiding ribosome assembly in eukaryotic systems is emerging, bacteria use an unrelated core set of assembly factors for which high-resolution structural information is still missing. To address this, we used single-particle cryo-electron microscopy to visualize the effects of bacterial ribosome assembly factors RimP, RbfA, RsmA, and RsgA on the conformational landscape of the 30 ribosomal subunit and obtained eight snapshots representing late steps in the folding of the decoding center. Analysis of these structures identifies a conserved secondary structure switch in the 16 ribosomal RNA central to decoding site maturation and suggests both a sequential order of action and molecular mechanisms for the assembly factors in coordinating and controlling this switch.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: The knowledge about blood circulating microbiome and its functional relevance in healthy individuals remains limited. An assessment of changes in the circulating microbiome was performed by sequencing peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) bacterial DNA from goats supplemented or not in early life with rumen liquid transplantation.
Results: Most of the bacterial DNA associated to PBMC was identified predominantly as Proteobacteria (55%) followed by Firmicutes (24%), Bacteroidetes (11%) and Actinobacteria (8%).
Although genome-wide association studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the susceptibility to Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infection, only a few functional mutations for bovine paratuberculosis (PTB) have been characterized. Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) are genetic variants typically located in gene regulatory regions that alter gene expression in an allele-specific manner.
