The aim of this study is to evaluate a new tumour marker, HE4, in comparison with CA 125 and the Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm (ROMA) in healthy women and in patients with benign and malignant gynaecological diseases. CA 125 and HE4 serum levels were determined in 66 healthy women, 285 patients with benign gynaecological diseases (68 endometriosis, 56 myomas, 137 ovarian cysts and 24 with other diseases), 33 patients with non-active gynaecological cancer and 143 with active gynaecological cancer (111 ovarian cancers). CA 125 and HE4 cut-offs were 35 U/mL and 150 pmol/L, respectively.

Purpose: To evaluate the results of high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDRBT) using a schedule of three or four fractions per week, when possible, in 89 patients on local control and toxicity in postoperative treatment of endometrial carcinoma. The effect of the overall HDRBT treatment time (OTT) on toxicity was also evaluated.

Patients And Methods: Fédération Internationale de Gynécologie Obstétrique Stage: 24 IB, 45 IC, 4 IIA, 6 IIB, 4 IIIA, 2 IIIB, and 4 IIIC.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to compare the feasibility, safety, and survival outcomes of Coelio-Schauta (CS) procedure versus open Wertheim-Meigs (WM) as primary surgical treatment of early-stage cervical cancer.

Methods: Observational study on the consecutive cases of cervical cancer undergoing CS during the last 11 years at our institution was performed. Data on clinical characteristics of patients, surgical performance, long-term morbidity, and survival were prospectively analyzed and compared with a historical series of 23 consecutive WM performed at the same hospital in the immediate previous period.

Purpose: To analyze the long-term results of a pilot study assessing excision and brachytherapy as salvage treatment for local recurrence after conservative treatment of breast cancer.

Methods And Materials: Between December 1990 and March 2001, 36 patients with breast-only recurrence less than 3 cm in diameter after conservative treatment for Stage I or II breast carcinoma were treated with local excision followed by high-dose rate brachytherapy implants (30 Gy in 12 fractions over a period of 5 days). No patient was lost to follow-up.

Purpose: Inguinal lymphadenectomy, unilateral or bilateral, is widely used in cases of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma but has a high morbidity. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy may be used in the management of these patients. The aims of this study were firstly to determine the reliability of SLN biopsy in predicting regional lymph node status and secondly to apply this technique in the routine clinical setting.

The serum levels of CYFRA 21.1, CEA and SCC were prospectively determined in 156 patients diagnosed with carcinoma of the uterine cervix from 1995 to 2003. Histology revealed squamous cancer in 119 patients, adenocarcinoma in 25 patients and adenosquamous carcinoma in the remaining 12 patients.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) serum levels were prospectively determined in 159 untreated patients diagnosed with carcinoma of the uterine cervix from 1991 to 2001. The histological analysis showed epidermoid cancer in 117 patients, adenocarcinoma in 26 patients, adenosquamous carcinoma in 12 patients and other histological types in the remaining 4 patients. Tumor marker sensitivity was related to the histological type with abnormal SCC (>2 ng/ml) in 51.

Objective: The aim was to determine the feasibility of surgical identification and pathological ultrastaging of sentinel nodes (SNs) in vulvar carcinoma and to evaluate whether SN negativity rules out the possibility of metastasis in other nodes and can therefore avoid conventional lymphadenectomy.

Material And Methods: In 26 patients with vulvar squamous cell carcinoma the SNs were detected using both peritumoral injection of (99m)Tc and blue dye (isosulfan or methylene) before the surgical procedure. Dissection of the SNs was followed by standard lymphadenectomy and vulvar exeresis.
