Poor nutritional conditions persist in many Mayan communities in Yucatán, Mexico, even though various programs have been implemented. The study aimed to compare the effects of a community-based nutritional intervention with an intercultural focus versus a conventional nutritional intervention on body mass index (BMI) and diet in women in Mayan communities in Yucatán. Background And Aims: It has been demonstrated that heterozygote and homozygote thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) mutant allele carriers are at high risk to develop severe and potentially fatal hematopoietic toxicity after treatment with standard doses of 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and methotrexate (MX). Those drugs are the backbone of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and several autoimmune disease treatments. We undertook this study to determine the frequency of the TPMT deficient alleles in children with ALL and non-ALL subjects from Mexico City and Yucatan, Mexico.

Activation of gamma-aminobutyric acid B (GABA(B)) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors produces presynaptic inhibition at glutamatergic terminals in the rat neocortex. To evaluate interactions between these metabotropic receptors, field potentials were recorded in layer 2/3 of somatosensory cortex. In addition, the paired pulse (PP) protocol was used to measure changes in the ratio of the second/first extracellular synaptic potentials (S(2)/S(1) ratio) as an index of glutamate release probability in the area.
