Background: Indications of transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) are conditioned by the risk of local relapse.
Objective: To evaluate prognostic factors of local relapse and local control with TLM (LC-TLM).
Methods: Local relapse and LC-TLM were evaluated in 1119 patients.
Background: The accuracy of white light endoscopy in combination with narrow band imaging (WLE + NBI) for diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) does not reach 100%. We evaluated the characteristics of the false-negative and false-positive cases.
Methods: Five hundred thirty lesions of the upper airways were evaluated.
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the value of narrow band imaging (NBI) examination in the office for the diagnosis and follow-up of upper airway premalignant and malignant lesions.
Methods: Four hundred eighty lesions were evaluated with white light endoscopy (WLE) and NBI before a biopsy/excision. Additionally, 151 premalignant lesions were followed up without proven biopsy.
Objectives: To analyze the role of audiometry in considering change to a less ototoxic treatment in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients.
Methods: Consecutive patients prescribed high-dose cisplatin (100 mg/m2) between January 2013 and February 2015 were enrolled. Audiometry was performed at baseline and before cisplatin.
Background And Objectives: Previous studies showed good short-term Quality of life (QOL) after Transoral Laser Microsurgery (TLM) for laryngeal cancer. Here, we aimed to evaluate QOL after TLM in the long-term.
Methods: Prospective longitudinal study.
This study aims to describe the prevalence of alcohol consumption in patients diagnosed with an upper aerodigestive tract cancer (UADTC) and evaluate the clinical impact of head and neck surgeons' recommendations on alcohol intake. An observational, retrospective, and cross-sectional study was conducted. Socio-demographic data, type of cancer, psychiatric history, substance-use history, and DSM-IV-TR criteria for alcohol dependence were recorded.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis from an SPSS database.
Introduction: Local progression of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) after failure of standard therapies may cause pain, ulceration, and bleeding. As patients are fully aware of the tumor growth, they might suffer high grade anxiety. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a new local palliative treatment for skin metastases of malignant melanoma or other tumors, including squamous head e neck cancer patients.

Four hundred and one consecutive disease-free patients were evaluated 1 year after treatment using the University of Washington-QOL v4, the SF-12 (short form of SF-36), and a questionnaire about self-rated health status. The importance of age, gender, tumor location, tumor size, tumor stage, neck dissection and adjuvant treatment were evaluated.

The aim of this study is to assess the correlation between the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) serologic status of patients who underwent for curative resection for squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx and their prognosis. From April 2004 to March 2005, we included eighty patients with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer.

In this scenario, quality of life (QOL) may become an important tool for treatment planning. We aimed to evaluate QOL changes after transoral laser microsurgery (TLM).

Purpose Of Review: Organ preservation strategies are a major focus of interest in head and neck cancer. There are two ways to preserve the function in the treatment of squamous cell carcinomas of the hypopharynx: organ-sparing surgery or neoadjuvant or concomitant chemoradiotherapy. From the surgical point of view, the possibilities of organ sparing have been increased with the use of transoral carbon dioxide laser surgery.

Objectives: Weekly paclitaxel should be an active and well tolerated regimen for palliative treatment of platin-resistant patients with recurrent or metastatic carcinoma of the head and neck. We analyzed the antitumor activity and toxicity profile.
Objective: To evaluate the role of chemotherapy in advanced cancer of the oral cavity by assessing its influence on the survival of patients receiving palliative care and its ability to improve the expectations of curative surgery.
Patients And Method: Ninety-nine consecutive patients were analyzed to assess their course, the prognostic factors for tumour progression, and overall survival after treatment with two different chemotherapy regimes: cisplatin plus bleomycin (n=45) or cisplatin plus 5-fluorouracil (n=52). For the analysis, patients were split into groups depending on the treatment intention: palliative (n=41) or neo-adjuvant (n=56).
Background: The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the sinonasal tract and its clinicopathological implications were evaluated.
Methods: All SCCs of the sinonasal tract diagnosed in the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona from 1981 to 2006 were retrospectively evaluated (N = 60). Clinical and pathological data were reviewed.
Background: Transoral CO(2) laser microsurgery (TLM) resection of laryngeal-hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas has become a standard procedure. The objective was to evaluate whether there is a relationship between TLM and a higher incidence of distant metastases.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 340 consecutive patients with laryngeal or hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated with TLM.
Objective: To evaluate serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as a prognostic factor in patients with recurrent and/or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck treated with metronomic (weekly) paclitaxel.
Design: Before-and-after trial.
Patients: A total of 33 consecutive patients were enrolled.
Benign and malignant tumors of the tongue base can be removed by various surgical approaches. A rare case of neurilemmoma of the base of the tongue removed by transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) is presented. Schwannomas in this area usually present as a slow-growing, painless mass on the tongue surface.

We evaluated the voice quality after laser cordectomy for early glottic cancer in a variety of vocal situations and its relation with the extension of resection and the age.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of voice quality in 42 consecutive male patients treated for T1 glottic carcinoma with laser cordectomy.

Histological affected or close margin is an adverse factor in conventional surgery of larynx-hypopharynx cancer. Our objective was to analyze the relevance of the margins in transoral laser microsurgery (TLM). A retrospective study of 357 consecutive patients with cancer of the larynx and hypopharynx (T1-T4) treated with TLM.

We reviewed our experience with sinonasal cancer patients to assess the prognostic factors. Between 1974 and 1995, we enrolled 125 patients (58 + 16 years [mean age + SD]; 94 males and 31 females). Tumor stage distribution was: T1, 64 patients; T2, 36 patients; and T3, 25 patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of TLS in the treatment of selected HC.
Methods: Twenty-eight patients with HC were treated with TLS and neck dissection.
Plasma viral load and T-cell subset determinations in blood are the markers used for monitoring HIV-1 infection. However, key pathogenesis events, viral replication and most immunologic changes occur in the lymphoid tissues. We have studied the tonsillar biopsies of 30 patients in the early stages of the disease, before initiating treatment and after 12 and 36 months of fully effective highly active antiretroviral therapy.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn 81 antiretroviral-navie HIV-1 chronic-infected patients, we found a correlation among tonsillar tissue viral load, and virological and immunological measures in blood at baseline. No correlation was observed after 1 year of antiretroviral therapy. A protease inhibitor-containing regimen was the best predictor of good tonsillar tissue virological response.
