Aims: Electromagnetic induction heating has demonstrated in vitro antibacterial efficacy over biofilms on metallic biomaterials, although no in vivo studies have been published. Assessment of side effects, including thermal necrosis of adjacent tissue, would determine transferability into clinical practice. Our goal was to assess bone necrosis and antibacterial efficacy of induction heating on biofilm-infected implants in an in vivo setting.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines 50 cases of distinct lesions derived from notochordal cells (NCDL), including various types of chordomas and benign tumors over the past 55 years in a tertiary hospital setting.
  • Conventional chordomas were found to be lobulated masses with specific imaging characteristics and a variety of growth patterns, while benign notochordal cell tumors (BNCT) were less aggressive, presenting as well-defined lesions without infiltration.
  • Follow-up strategies for BNCT involved radiological monitoring, showing no local recurrence or metastasis, while conventional chordoma cases faced higher risks with significant rates of local recurrence and metastasis, necessitating more aggressive treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Angiosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that arises from the cells lining blood vessels, and current treatments for it are not very effective, making the search for new therapies important.
  • Researchers developed and studied cell line models in both 2D and 3D cultures to understand how the cancer cells grow and spread, proving these models useful for research in angiosarcoma.
  • A drug screening identified 8-amino adenosine as a promising candidate, showing effectiveness in reducing cell growth and invasion at low doses, but it didn't work better in combination with established cancer drugs like paclitaxel or gemcitabine.

Background: Survival in patients who have Ewing sarcoma is correlated with postchemotherapy response (tumor necrosis). This treatment response has been categorized as the response rate, similar to what has been used in osteosarcoma. There is controversy regarding whether this is appropriate or whether it should be a dichotomy of complete versus incomplete response, given how important a complete response is for in overall survival of patients with Ewing sarcoma.

Background: Eribulin has shown antitumour activity in some soft tissue sarcomas (STSs), but it has only been approved for advanced liposarcoma (LPS).

Methods: In this study, we evaluated the effect of eribulin on proliferation, migration and invasion capabilities in LPS, leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and fibrosarcoma (FS) models, using both monolayer (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) spheroid cell cultures. Additionally, we explored combinations of eribulin with other drugs commonly used in the treatment of STS with the aim of increasing its antitumour activity.

Background: Deep soft tissue sarcomas are frequently in contact with bone. The therapeutic decision of a composite resection strategy may be challenging, which is usually based on clinical and radiological criteria. The aims of the study were to evaluate the overall frequency of bone and periosteal infiltration in these patients in whom composite resection was indicated, and evaluate the role of magnetic resonance imaging and bone scintigraphy in this scenario.

Sarcoma is one of the most severe forms of pediatric cancer and current therapies -chemotherapy and surgery- fail to eradicate the disease in half of patients. Preclinical studies combining new therapeutic approaches can be useful to design better therapies. On one hand, it is known that CXCR4 expression is implicated in rhabdomyosarcoma progression, so we analyzed relapses and chemotherapy-resistant rhabdomyosarcoma tumors from pediatric patients and found that they had particularly high levels of CXCR4 expression.

Gastric carcinogenesis proceeds through a series of gastric cancer precursor lesions (GCPLs) leading to gastric cancer (GC) development. Although Helicobacter pylori infection initiates this process, genetic factors also play a role. We previously reported that genetic variability in MUC2 is associated with the evolution of GCPLs.

Background: A biopsy is the final step in the diagnosis of sarcomas. Complete resection of the biopsy tract traditionally has been recommended in musculoskeletal oncology guidelines, as that tract is considered potentially seeded with tumor cells. However, to our knowledge, the frequency and implications of contamination of the biopsy tract-specifically with respect to the likelihood of local recurrence-and the factors that affect cell seeding are not well described.

As of today two types of cartilage tumors remain a challenge even for the orthopedic oncologist: enchondroma (E), a benign tumor, and chondrosarcoma (LGC), a malignant and low aggressiveness tumor. A prospective study of 133 patients with a cartilaginous tumor of low aggressiveness in the long bones of the appendicular skeleton was done to prove this difficult differential diagnosis. Parameters including medical history and radiological and nuclear imaging were collected and compared to the result of the biopsy.
