Lumbar paraspinal intramuscular myxoma: A case report.

Background: With an estimated incidence of about 1 case/million patients, paravertebral intramuscular myxomas represent a rare cause of lumbar pain. Rather, they typically occur in the heart and in bone tissues.

Case Description: A 64-year-old female presented with a protracted course of nocturnal lumbar pain that radiated to the anterior aspect of the right thigh accompanied by numbness.

Fourth ventricle neurocysticercosis presenting with Bruns' syndrome: A case report.

Background: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common helminthic infection of the central nervous system. We present a case of the fourth ventricle NCC that presented with Bruns' syndrome (with headaches worsened by head movements, gait ataxia, and vomiting) and the operative technique used for cyst removal.

Case Description: A 39-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with moderate-to-severe headaches that got worse in the afternoon and were triggered by head movements, relieved on prone position, and were associated with gait ataxia and vomiting.

HIPTCN: Prospective Observational Study of Hypocoagulated Head Trauma Patients with Normal Admission Computed Tomography Scan.

Introduction: Our national protocol for traumatic brain injury dictates that hypocoagulated patients with mild trauma and initial tomography scan with no intracranial traumatic changes must be hospitalized for 24 hours and do a post-surveillance tomography scan. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the clinical relevance of these measures.

Arteriovenous fistula of the filum terminale masqueraded as a failed back surgery syndrome - A case report and review of literature.

Background: The filum terminale arteriovenous fistulas (FTAVFs) are a very rare type of spinal vascular malformation. Clinically, these lesions could present with a progressive ascending myelopathy also called FoixAlajouanine syndrome. Due to the rarity of these vascular malformation, some can be misdiagnosed, submitted to unnecessary spinal surgery, and even masqueraded as a failed back surgery syndrome.

Cervical spine multiple myeloma and isolated radiotherapy.

Multiple myeloma is a hematologic malignancy frequently presenting with spinal lytic lesions. The authors report the case of a patient with an extensively destructive osteolytic MM lesion in the cervical spine treated exclusively with radiotherapy. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans showed an arrest of further progression of instability and resolution of the lytic lesion, showing signs of new bone formation.

Prolonged protein deprivation differentially affects calretinin- and parvalbumin-containing interneurons in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of adult rats.

Protein deprivation is a detrimental nutritional state that induces several deleterious changes in the rat hippocampal formation. In this study, we compared the effects of protein deprivation in the number of parvalbumin (PV)-immunoreactive and calretinin (CR)-immunoreactive interneurons of the dentate gyrus, which are involved in the control of calcium homeostasis and fine tuning of the hippocampal circuits. Two month-old rats were randomly assigned to control and low-protein diet groups.
