Durvalumab with or without bevacizumab with transarterial chemoembolisation in hepatocellular carcinoma (EMERALD-1): a multiregional, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study.

Background: Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is standard of care for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma that is amenable to embolisation; however, median progression-free survival is still approximately 7 months. We aimed to assess whether adding durvalumab, with or without bevacizumab, might improve progression-free survival.

Methods: In this multiregional, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study (EMERALD-1), adults aged 18 years or older with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma amenable to embolisation, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1 at enrolment, and at least one measurable intrahepatic lesion per modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours (RECIST) were enrolled at 157 medical sites including research centres and general and specialist hospitals in 18 countries.

Emergency laparotomy and endoscopic gastrostomy in patients on extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support.

Introduction: An infrequent yet known complication of ECMO is abdominal compartment syndrome requiring emergency laparotomy. Also, the need for prolonged enteral nutrition while on ECMO may require endoscopic gastrostomy to maintain adequate nutritional status. Here we describe our experience with emergency laparotomy and endoscopic gastrostomy in patients on ECMO support.

The first successful lung transplant in Colombia was performed on October 28, 1997 in Medellín by Alberto Villegas Hernández at the "Clínica Cardiovascular Santa María" today called the Cardio VID Clinic. Here we present both survival outcomes and characteristics of the oldest and most experienced lung transplant program in Colombia. We conducted a retrospective study of all patients taken to lung transplantation at the Cardio VID Clinic in Medellín, Colombia from October 1997 to October 2022.

Study of a set of reading precursors among Chilean children with Down syndrome.

Learning to read for children with Down syndrome is relevant because of the impact this ability has on learning and the development of autonomy. Previous research has described reading development in this population, but it is not clear if the process and precursors are the same in a transparent language like Spanish. This study explores performance in a set of precursors (phonological awareness, visual recognition, vocabulary, letter knowledge and verbal reasoning) in 42 children with Down syndrome between 6:0 and 10:11 years.

Three months later, due to progressive symptoms, she was taken to surgery and had an elective minimally invasive mitral valve replacement.

Introduction: In the mid-fifties, Colombia adopted and implemented the Malaria Eradication Campaign (MEC), which has not been evaluated yet in the country.

Objective: To evaluate the results achieved during the attack and consolidation phases of the MEC regarding malaria transmission in Colombia between 1959 and 1979.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a descriptive and retrospective study based on the malariometric and operational results of the MEC in Colombia from 1959 to 1979 compiled from the archives of the Ministry of Public Health.

There is a growing interest in biomedical engineering in developing procedures that provide accurate simulations of the neural response to electrical stimulus produced by implants. Moreover, recent research focuses on models that take into account individual patient characteristics. We present a phenomenological computational model that is customized with the patient's data provided by the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) for simulating the neural response to electrical stimulus produced by the electrodes of cochlear implants (CIs).

Bench bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement in a donor heart before transplantation.

Critical donor shortages have impulsed the need to expand donor heart eligibility through the use of marginal hearts in cardiac transplantation. Donor valvular disease has been considered as an absolute contraindication for transplant. A 39-year-old male patient with end-stage non-compaction cardiomyopathy, an INTERMACS II heart failure, and a left ventricular ejection fraction of 8% was taken to an orthotopic heart transplantation.

Introduction: Data on extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy for pregnant patients with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) infection are limited. Here we report a case of an emergency cesarean section performed while the COVID-19 positive mother was on ECMO support.

Case Report: A 36-year-old COVID-19 positive patient at 26 weeks gestational age presented with respiratory failure requiring extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation therapy.

Preoperative Doppler Ultrasonography Allen Test for Radial Forearm Free Flap in Oral Cancer Reconstruction: Implications in Clinical Practice.

The Radial Forearm Free Flap (RFFF) is one of the most widely used microsurgical flaps for intraoral reconstruction. Although the Clinical Allen Test (CAT) is the most widely used preoperative diagnostic method with which to study the distal patency of the hand prior to the use of RFFF, several authors have reported potentially preventable serious vascular complications. This study included 87 consecutive patients with cancer of the oral cavity and RFFF as the flap of choice who were treated between 2010 and 2020, and compares the results of the Clinical Allen Test (CAT), the Doppler Allen Test (DAT) and the Surgical Allen Test (SAT).

Unlabelled: Previous studies have suggested an important role of retinoic acid (RA) and ascorbic acid (AA) in the stimulation of osteoblastic differentiation; however, the function of RA and AA in the osteogenic differentiation from human dental pulp (hDPSCs) remains unclear.

Objective: This study investigated the effects of RA and AA on the differentiation of osteoblast from hDPSCs.

Methods: hDPSCs were treated with different doses of RA and AA, separately or in combination (RA ​+ ​AA).

Purpose: To identify (PROs) and other clinical outcome measures (contrast sensitivity (CS), low-luminance visual acuity (LLVA) and reading acuity or reading speed (RA-RS)), relevant to patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or diabetic retinopathy (DR), which would be recommended for use in clinical practice.

Methods: The , based on the synthesis of the scientific evidence and the collective judgment of an expert panel using the two-round Delphi method, was applied. The evidence synthesis was performed by searching for articles on outcome measures for AMD and/or DR published between 2005 and 2018 in English or Spanish.

Secondary Cervicofacial Soft Tissue Reconstruction With Upper Trapezius Myocutaneous Flap in "Frozen Neck" With Bone Flap and Reconstructive Plate Exposure.

A frozen neck is a scarred neck with severe fibrosis with a loss of tissue planes secondary to prior irradiation with or without surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of cervicofacial reconstruction in patients with soft tissue defects and bone flap and reconstruction plate exposure with the upper trapezius myocutaneous flap. Fifteen oncologic patients with prior surgery and radiotherapy developed soft tissue dehiscence with bone and osteosynthesis material exposure.
