Upper endoscopy versus endosonography in differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal bulging.

Context: The identification of a bulging covered by normal epithelium is a common finding during an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Objective: To compare the endoscopic and endosonography findings in the differential diagnosis of the gastrointestinal bulging (subepithelial tumor or extrinsic compression).

Method: Patients referred by endosonography with bulging of upper gastrointestinal tract were studied retrospectively.

Daily vitamin supplementation and hypovitaminosis after obesity surgery.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether constant daily vitamin supplementation would be sufficient to prevent possible vitamin deficiencies in obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

Methods: The study was conducted on 58 men and women (mean age 41 ± 10 y) who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass RYGB and were assessed preoperatively and at 3, 6, and 12 mo after surgery. During the postoperative period, the patients received a multivitamin-mineral supplement on a daily basis.

Moderate physical training attenuates muscle-specific effects on fibre type composition in adult rats submitted to a perinatal maternal low-protein diet.

Aim: To verify whether moderate physical training affects the muscle fibre composition of adult rats subjected to a low protein diet during the perinatal period.

Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups according to their mother's diet during gestation and lactation: control (17% casein, C) and low-protein (8% casein, LP). On postnatal day 60, half of each group was submitted to moderate physical training (8 weeks, 5 days/week(-1), 60 min/day(-1), at 70% of VO(2max), T) or not.

[Communication conceptions in hospital nursing management between head nurses in a university hospital].

The objective of the following study was to analyze the conceptions that head nurses of a university hospital have about nursing communication management. It is a descriptive-exploratory study with an interpretative qualitative approach. The set of data was produced between September and October 2007 through interviews with 19 head nurses in a university hospital in Southern Brazil and submitted to thematic analysis.

Maternal low-protein diet-induced delayed reflex ontogeny is attenuated by moderate physical training during gestation in rats.

We evaluated the effects of moderate- to low-intensity physical training during gestation on reflex ontogeny in neonate rats whose mothers were undernourished. Virgin female Wistar rats were divided into four groups as follows: untrained (NT, n 7); trained (T, n 7); untrained with a low-protein diet (NT+LP, n 7); trained with a low-protein diet (T+LP, n 4). Trained rats were subjected to a protocol of moderate physical training on a treadmill over a period of 4 weeks (5 d/week and 60 min/d, at 65 % of VO₂max).

Influence of biliary drainage on the repair of hepatic lesions in biliary fibrosis.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, which is endemic in many regions of Latin America. We describe the case of a 60-year-old man from a region endemic for PCM who presented with a long history of left hip pain. He had been treated over the past 3 years with immunosuppressive drugs (methotrexate, leflunomide, and adalimumab) for rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Comparative morphology of the gonadal structure related to reproductive strategies in six species of neotropical catfishes (Teleostei: Siluriformes).

We studied the relationship between the morphology of the reproductive system and the reproductive strategies of six neotropical catfishes using macroscopic and microscopic analyses. The reproductive system of the examined Siluriformes showed diversified characteristics, but permitted their being grouped according to three reproductive strategies: pelagic spawning, demersal spawning, and internally fertilizing. The pelagic spawners Pseudoplatystoma corruscans and Conorhynchos conirostris have testes that are characterized by filiform lobes, absence of testicular secretion, full-grown oocytes of small diameter, thin zona radiata, and cuboidal follicular cells.

Change in predicted 10-year cardiovascular risk following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery: who benefits?

Background: The risk of developing cardiovascular disease is higher in obese than in non-obese individuals. Surgery for obesity is effective in reducing weight and resolution of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Our aim was to assess the estimated 10-year cardiovascular risk of obese patients before and after treatment of obesity with a gastric bypass.

Histological diagnosis of oral lesions with cutting needle biopsy: a pilot study.

Objectives: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cutting needle biopsy in the diagnosis of solid oral lesions.

Material And Methods: The biopsies were carried out on seven patients who presented with solid oral lesions with sizes ranging from 2 to 6 cm. Specimens were obtained from each lesion before conventional biopsies using a cutting needle with 18-gauge x 9 cm (MD TECH, Gainesville, FL, USA).

Structural organization of the cerebral cortex of the neotropical lizard Tropidurus hispidus.

Lizards belonging to the Tropiduridae family are "sit-and-wait" foragers, relying mainly on visual identification to catch prey that cross their visual fields. Little is known about the neurobiology of Tropiduridae lizards. We have used neurohistological techniques to study the structural organization of the telencephalon of the neotropical lizard Tropidurus hispidus, paying special attention to the cerebral cortex.

Spatial changes in the water quality of Itajaí-Açú Fluvial-Estuarine System, Santa Catarina, Brazil.

This study was carried out with the aim of evaluating the spatial variation of the water quality in the Itajaí-Açú River estuary. Seven stations along the estuary were monitored on a weekly basis, from October 2003 to December 2004, plus two stations in tributaries (Itajaí-Mirim River, the main tributary, and one reference station). This monitoring included measurements of salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, nutrients(NH+4,NO3-2,NO-3,PO3-4,H4SiO4) Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), total phosphorous and dissolved organic phosphorus (TP and DOP), particulate organic carbon (POC), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and chlorophyll-a (Cla).

[Health care given to patients with violence situations: conceptions of professionals in basic health units].

The following study aimed at analyzing the conceptions of basic health units' professionals on the service rendered to users with violence situations, within their different manifestations. It is a qualitative research conducted with nurses, doctors, nursing technicians, and communitarian health agents through semi-structured interviews. The set of data was collected from October 2007 and March 2008 in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and analyzed through theme analysis.

An analytical model for hydraulic fracturing in shallow bedrock formations.

A theoretical method is proposed to estimate post-fracturing fracture size and transmissivity, and as a test of the methodology, data collected from two wells were used for verification. This method can be employed before hydrofracturing in order to obtain estimates of the potential hydraulic benefits of hydraulic fracturing. Five different pumping test analysis methods were used to evaluate the well hydraulic data.

Expression of the immediate-early gene egr-1 and substance P in the spinal cord following locomotor training in adult rats.

The immediate-early gene egr-1 has been shown to have an increased expression during long-term potentiation (LTP). High frequency electrical stimulation induces an increase in such expression in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. However, evidence demonstrating the activation of this gene in the spinal cord and its relationship with LTP is still scarce.

Natural polysaccharides as active biomaterials in nanostructured films for sensing.

The search for natural, biocompatible and degradable materials amenable to be used in biomedical/analytical applications has attracted attention, either from the environmental or medical point of view. Examples are the polysaccharides extracted from natural gums, which have found applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries as stabilizers or thickening agent. In a previous paper, however, it was shown that a Brazilian natural gum, chicha (Sterculia striata), is suitable for application as building block for nanostructured film fabrication in conjunction with phthalocyanines.

Structure of the rat nasal mucosa after acute and chronic hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Effects of physical exercise during pregnancy and protein malnutrition during pregnancy and lactation on the development and growth of the offspring's femur.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of physical training of mother rats during pregnancy associated with a low-protein diet offered during pregnancy and lactation on the development and growth of the femur of their offspring.

Methods: Forty 90-day old male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: pups of sedentary nourished mothers, pups of sedentary malnourished mothers, pups of trained nourished mothers, and pups of trained malnourished mothers; all groups included 10 rats. Physical training on a treadmill for 8 weeks, 5 weeks before conception and 3 weeks in the gestational period for mother rats of pups of trained nourished mothers and pups of trained malnourished mothers.

[Systematic review on the management dimension of nursing work in hospital environments].

Nursing work is divided into different dimensions: health care, education, management and research. Considering hospital environment, nurses are in charge of many managerial activities. The following study aimed at analyzing how the managerial dimension in the nursing is described in Brazilian nursing papers through a systematic review on the literature.

[Survey of sharpshooters (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) associated with Xylella fastidiosa transmission in citrus groves of the North Coast of Bahia State].

The causal agent of citrus variegated clorosis, Xylella fastidiosa, is transmitted by leafhoppers of the subfamily Cicadellinae, whose species vary regionally. The goal of this study was to identify potential vectors of this pathogen in citrus groves of Bahia North Coast, Brazil. The survey was done from March/2002 to February/2003 in three seven- to nine-year-old sweet orange (Citrus sinensis, Pêra variety) groves located in Rio Real, BA.

[Unexplained acute pancreatitis: the microlithiasis must be searched?].

In a large number of patients, with episodes of acute pancreatitis the etiology is not identified, even after initial clinical history, detailed physical examination, laboratory tests and biochemical exams and an transabdominal ultrasound. This patient are considered with a unexplained acute pancreatitis. In this cases the treatment is restricted to improvement of symptoms.

[Morphological features of utilization intraperitoneal double-sided prostheses in inguinoplasty in dogs].

Objective: To asses the morphological features of the behavior of a double-sided prostheses using inguinoplasty laparotomy in dogs with latex side turned to the visceras.

Methods: Twenty dogs were divided into two groups of 10 and submitted into infraumbilical laparotomy with double-sided prostheses fixed in an inguinal area and in the other side area a control prostheses of polipropilene (PPL). Macroscopics itens were studied on the 14th and 28th day post-operatory, and they were related to obstruction and intestinal fistulas, encystation, fusion and especially sticker.
