Assessment of the Prediction Power of Forced Ageing Methodology on Lager Beer Aldehyde Evolution during Maritime Transportation.

The globalisation of the beer market forces brewers to have methodologies that rapidly evaluate the evolution of beer flavour stability. Commonly used forced ageing methods have limitations since temperature and transportation conditions (temperature, vibrations, long-distance travel, and other factors) impact beer quality. This study assessed the prediction power of a forced ageing methodology on the evolution of aldehydes during maritime transportation across four sample groups (maritime transport, storage simulation, and three ageing periods: 7, 21, and 28 days at 37 °C), which differed in their bottle-opening system (either crown cap or ring pull cap).

Haemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis Associated With Anaplastic Large-Cell Lymphoma in a Young Woman.

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a syndrome of excessive immunological activation that can be triggered by various diseases, including haematological cancers. We report a case of a 25-year-old woman presenting with constitutional symptoms and a painful thoracic mass of four months duration. Laboratory exams showed pancytopenia, hypertriglyceridemia and extremely high serum ferritin levels.

Deep Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Thromboembolism Associated With Retroperitoneal Hematoma in a Patient With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type VI.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of genetic diseases of the connective tissue, which is rare and is characterized by joint hypermobility, tissue, and vascular fragility. We present the case of a 38-year-old woman with a known diagnosis of EDS type VI who came to the emergency room, complaining of sudden dyspnea in the context of abdominal pain and pain in the left lower limb with one week of evolution. Computed axial tomography showed the presence of bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism, iliofemoral thrombosis, and a retroperitoneal hematoma.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis: An atypical initial presentation.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a necrotizing vasculitis of small and medium vessels with involvement of the upper and lower respiratory tract and necrotizing pauci-immune glomerulonephritis [1]. This vasculitis has a higher incidence in men in the sixth decade of life and more than 80% of patients have positive anti-neutrophil cytoplasm (ANCA) antibodies [1,2]. We present the case of a 23-year-old man with two weeks of evolution with polyarthralgia, asthenia, and cough with hemoptoic sputum.

Granular cell tumor of the breast: correlations between imaging and pathology findings.

Objective: To review the imaging features of granular cell tumors of the breast (on mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging), establishing a pathological correlation, in order to familiarize radiologists with this entity and make them aware of the differential diagnoses, other than malignancy, of lesions with spiculated margins.

Materials And Methods: We reviewed the medical records (from a clinical-pathology database and picture archiving and communication system) of five patients with a pathologically confirmed diagnosis of granular cell tumor of the breast, treated at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Lisbon, in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, between January 2012 and December 2018.

Results: All five tumors exhibited imaging features highly suggestive of malignancy (BI-RADS 5 lesions), namely spiculated margins, significant depth, and posterior acoustic shadowing (on ultrasound).

Multi-target optimization of solid phase microextraction to analyse key flavour compounds in wort and beer.

Despite the literature comprises numerous studies dealing with the analysis of wort and beer flavour-related compounds by HS-SPME followed by GC-MS quantification, no generalized consensus exists regarding the optimal conditions for the extraction procedure. The complex chemistry nature of these matrices, the number of analytes, as well as the number and interactions among parameters affecting the extraction performance, requires the adoption of optimal experimental design protocols. This aspect is often overlooked and often not properly addressed in practice.

Granular Cell Tumor: A Rare Breast Lesion.

Granular cell tumors are uncommon, and are usually benign neoplasms that can mimic malignancy on breast imaging tests. These tumors can originate anywhere in the body and the breast accounts for only a few cases of all granular cell tumors. We report a case of a 54-year-old woman with a granular cell tumor of the breast presenting clinically on breast imaging (ultrasound, mammography and magnetic resonance) as a suspicious lesion.

Rapid Determination of Sotolon in Fortified Wines Using a Miniaturized Liquid-Liquid Extraction Followed by LC-MS/MS Analysis.

Sotolon (4,5-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-one) is a powerful odorant usually pointed out as being responsible not only for the characteristic curry notes of the finest fortified wines but also for the off-flavour notes in prematurely oxidized white wines. Most methods reported in literature for quantifying sotolon in wines are quite laborious and use large volumes of organic solvents. Thus, in the present study, the development of a simple, fast, and environment-friendly method for the quantification of sotolon in fortified wine is herein presented.

Radiation-induced angiosarcoma of the breast: a retrospective analysis of 15 years' experience at an oncology center.

Objective: To characterize a population of patients with radiation-induced angiosarcoma (RIAS) of the breast treated at an oncology center, focusing mainly on the imaging features, although also on the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management.

Materials And Methods: We performed a retrospective review of patients with histologically proven angiosarcoma of the breast or chest wall, all of whom received radiotherapy, after conservative or radical breast surgery, between 2000 and 2015.

Results: Eleven patients met the inclusion criteria.

The Use of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Mutation Carriers Undergoing Prophylactic Mastectomy: A Retrospective Consecutive Case-Series Study.

Introduction: Sentinel lymph node biopsy in prophylactic mastectomy is controversial. It avoids lymphadenectomy in occult carcinoma but is associated with increased morbidity. Women with BRCA mutations have a higher incidence of occult carcinoma and our objective was to assess the clinical utility of sentinel lymph node biopsy when these women undergo prophylactic mastectomy.

Invasive lobular carcinoma: a rare presentation in the male breast.

Breast cancer in men is uncommon, accounting for <1% of all breast cancers. Even though lobular structures are quite infrequent in the male breast, rare cases of invasive lobular breast carcinoma have been described, representing 1-2% of all breast cancers in men. Risk factors include undescended testes, congenital inguinal hernia, orchiectomy, orchitis, testicular injury, infertility and Klinefelter's syndrome, previous thoracic radiotherapy, alterations of the oestrogen-testosterone ratio and familial history (BRCA 2 and 1).

Optimal design of experiments applied to headspace solid phase microextraction for the quantification of vicinal diketones in beer through gas chromatography-mass spectrometric detection.

Vicinal diketones, namely diacetyl (DC) and pentanedione (PN), are compounds naturally found in beer that play a key role in the definition of its aroma. In lager beer, they are responsible for off-flavors (buttery flavor) and therefore their presence and quantification is of paramount importance to beer producers. Aiming at developing an accurate quantitative monitoring scheme to follow these off-flavor compounds during beer production and in the final product, the head space solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) analytical procedure was tuned through experiments planned in an optimal way and the final settings were fully validated.

Primary neuroendocrine breast carcinoma: a case report and literature review.

The authors present a case of a neuroendocrine carcinoma in an asymptomatic 75-year-old woman, detected in routine breast screening. The lesion was visible at mammography as a well circumscribed, medium density nodule, with no associated microcalcifications, and at ultrasonography as a hypoechoic nodule, with irregular shape and ill-defined margins. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed findings consistent with malignancy.

Volatile profile of Madeira wines submitted to traditional accelerated ageing.

The evolution of monovarietal fortified Madeira wines forced-aged by traditional thermal processing (estufagem) were studied in terms of volatiles. SPE extracts were analysed by GC-MS before and after heating at 45 °C for 3 months (standard) and at 70 °C for 1 month (overheating). One hundred and ninety volatile compounds were identified, 53 of which were only encountered in baked wines.

Validation of the gastroschisis experimental model and the influence of the mother's diet enriched with glutamine in the fetal morphology.

Purpose: To validate the gastroschisis experimental model in female rats and the effects on the glutamine fetal morphology during pregnancy.

Methods: Twelve pregnant rats Wistar were separated in two groups: Group I (n = 6 rats, 71 fetuses) took glutamine and Group II (n = 6 rats, 75 fetuses) took isocaloric supplementation. At the 18th day of pregnancy, female rats were taken to hysterotomy and the fetuses which were selected for the act of gastroschisis were partially removed from the womb and by the laparotomy technique, the exclusion of the intestine was done.

Rapid and sensitive methodology for determination of ethyl carbamate in fortified wines using microextraction by packed sorbent and gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection.

This work presents a new methodology to quantify ethyl carbamate (EC) in fortified wines. The presented approach combines the microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS), using a hand-held automated analytical syringe, with one-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry detection (GC-MS). The performance of different MEPS sorbent materials was tested, namely SIL, C2, C8, C18, and M1.

Polyphenols, antioxidant potential and color of fortified wines during accelerated ageing: the Madeira Wine case study.

Polyphenols, antioxidant potential and color of three types of fortified Madeira wines were evaluated during the accelerated ageing, named as estufagem. The traditional estufagem process was set to 45 °C for 3 months. Overheating conditions, 1 month at 70 °C, were also examined.

Development of a fast and reliable method for long- and short-term wine age prediction.

Wine age prediction based on its intrinsic characteristics can provide significant assistance to oenologists' quality evaluations, concerning wine ageing process control and wine quality assurance. Simpler, faster, cheaper and affordable analytical procedures would be greatly welcome to establish such a practice. In this study, we present a new and reliable strategy to predict wine age, in the long and short-term, centered on the use of wine UV-vis absorbance data, coupled with proper chemometric techniques.

Using GPS tracking and observations on group movements, we studied the search strategy and information transfer in two of the most colonial seabirds, Guanay cormorants (Phalacrocorax bougainvillii) and Peruvian boobies (Sula variegata). Both species breed together and feed on the same prey.
